REGENT THEATRE

“OUT WEST WITH THE HARDYS." The large audience at the Regent Theatre on Saturday night had presented to them the best comedy drama which the Hardy Family have brought to the screen. While teeming with humorous situations which keep the audience in an almost continuous simmer of laughter there are dramatic situations which appealed to those present who ranked the film as top-notch. The centre attraction was Mickey Rooney, who gives his best performance to date, providing a natural presentation of a boy’s troubles, ambitions and successes, combined with an egotism that is delightful. His antics “out west” provides the audience with a series of screams, and his acting is certainly of a high standard. Another entertaining performance was that of Virginia Weidler, the eleven-year-old star, who also presents her best performance to date. The way she handles the swanking Andy (Micky Rooney) out on the ranch is one of the highlights of this splendid picture. Lewis Stone as the Judge gives a remarkable performance and he still holds his position as one of the outstanding favourites of the screen. There are heart-throbs and plenty of action in the picture and the trials, tribulations and the joys of the family “out west” makes a great picture. “Out West With the Hardys” shows Judge Hardy facing the serious problem of keeping his energetic family properly corraled, but with his usual wisdom and understanding he manages to settle Andy’s troubles, prevents Marian from making a hasty marriage and solves the perplexing legal difficulties of an old sweetheart. Given an adventurous background of modern ranch life, the Hardys show plenty of action when they are invited to the ranch of Dora and Bill Northcote. Dora was a former sweetheart of the Judge, who has read that he is an expert on water rights and asks him to aid her in a battle over a river that is essential to her ranch. Andy clashes with Jake who proves that she is a better “man” than Andy by outriding him, outshooting him, and outroping him. “Out West with the Hardys” is a film treat of the highest class. The supports were a particularly good lot.
