Mr E. Cross, a well-known member of the Red Star Football Club’s team, and a Wairarapa representative, will leave Masterton shortly to take up a position in Wellington. Mr Cross has been a valued member of the club for some years? particularly in connection with it social activities. The funeral of the late Mr John Taylforth took place in Masterton yesterday, when a large attendance gathered to pay their last respects. The service was conducted by the Rev E. J. Rich who also officiated at the graveside? Among the many wreaths was one from the manager and staff of Messrs Levin and Co., Masterton. The pallbearers were Messrs Percy. Joseph and James Taylforth, sons of the deceased, W. Perry and S. Munn, sons-in-law. and J. Morgan, grandson. The death has occurred, at the age of 85. of Mrs Ellen Kennedy, widow of Mr James Kennedy, manager of the municipal gasworks for 45 years, stales a Press Association message from Greymouth. Mrs Kennedy arrived in New Zealand from Ireland in 1875, and had resided in Greymouth since 1883. Three sons, Matthew, manager of the Wellington Gas Company, Frank, Wellington, and the Rev. Dr. James Kennedy, Christchurch, and two daughters. MissMary Kennedy, Greymouth, and Mother St. Teresa, Prioress of the Good Shepherd Convent, Christchurch, survive her.

The death occurred in Waipukurau Hospital of Mr Charles Smith, a wellknown resident of Takapau. The youngest son of the late Mr James Smith, a well-known farmer in Canterbury, he was born at Teddington Bay 80 years ago. and in 1881 married Miss Mary Miller Patrick, youngest daughter of William Patrick. Geraldine. They went to the Dannevirke district in 1884. taking up bush land at Kiritaki. and Mr Smith interested himself in local body affairs, being chairman of the Maharahara Road Board, a member of the Woodville County Council, and of the local school committee. He was a foundation member of the Dannevirke A. and P. Association. He moved to Takapau in 1910, taking up the sheepfarming property later known as Dun Lee.
