WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING

("Ti.mes-Age” Special.)

The president (Mrs H. Knutson) presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute yesterday, when there was a large attendance of members. The meeting opened with the "Ode to Friendship” and "The Aspiration, followed by a prayer for peace. Correspondence was received from the Dominion president regarding the arrangements of exhibits for the Centennial Exhibition. This was fully discussed. It was decided to make a donation to the funds of the women’s section of the Centennial Exhibition. It was announced that the half-year-ly council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation would be held at Martinborough in October next. A very interesting travel talk was given by Mrs Jolly, of Martinborough, who received a hearty vote of thanks and was presented with a shoulder spray. The winners of the monthly competitions were as follow: —Woollen cosy, Mrs E. H. Hawker 1, Mrs Palmer 2, Mrs W. Steven 3. Cocoanut ice: Mrs Ovens 1, Mrs Rooney 2, Mrs A. Knutson 3.

The results of the competition on hints on gardening will be announced at the next monthly meeting. The winners of the rolled side of bacon competition were: First prize —Mrs A. Willoughby (Masterton); second prize, Mrs W. Pinfold; third prize. Mrs A. Peters. The net proceeds from this competition were £4 4s. The resignation of Mrs M. Woods, owing to her departure from Carterton, was accepted with regret. One new member was proposed. A dainty afternoon tea was served and the singing of the National Anthem brought a very enjoyable meeting to a close.

METHODIST CHURCH QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Carterton Methodist Circuit officials was held last night, there being a fair attendance. In connection with recent deaths, resolutions were passed referring to the loyal service rendered in their respective spheres by Mrs Welch, Mrs Eowyer and Mr C. E. Daniell. A number of sick and aged members were mentioned sympathetically. It was reported that a slight reduction had occurred in the number of members, and also in the Circuit Fund credit balance. The annual Silver Tree social was fixed for July 26 and it is hoped the financial position would be improved thereby. A letter was read referring .to a Methodist Centennial Fund, but consideration was deferred until the next meeting. It was stated that the Rev H. J. Odell is to visit the district towards the middle of August in the interest of the Home and Maori Mission Department, and at the end of August the Rev G. T. Symon, Youth Director, would visit Carterton. Trinity College, where the candidates for the ministry are trained, is to receive consideration some Sunday shortly, and opportunity will be afforded for donations to be made in support of it. The Circuit Stewards were instructed to take steps to select next year's minister. Football. Carterton third grade team to play College at Memorial Park, Masterton, at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow, is chosen as under:—Call. McGuinness (2). Geange (2). Hurndell (2). Braggins (2), Hindnip, Morris, Corlet, Sewell, Spooner, McPherson, Desmond. J. Hemi, the League footballer, who formerly played Rugby for Gladstone, will be playing in a trial game at Auckland tomorrow and may be chosen as a member of the New Zealand League team to tour England. Hockey Teams. The following players will represent Carterton against Wesley at Lansdowne at 2.45 p.m. tomorrow: —J. Newbould. A. Harp. I. Mackie. D. Irwin. M. Worsfold (captain). B. Roberts, V. Sayer, D. Jackson, A. Fisher. S. Fisher and A. Ward. Cars will leave the Post Office at 2 o’clock. The following is the Carterton junior team to play Greytown at Greytown at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow: —R. Mi - Harry Hawton is at present on a visit to Carterton. Some years ago Mr Hawton had a farm at Belvedere and afterwards had a motor garage in Belvedere Street. Since he left Carterton he has resided in several places and is a resident of Utiku. Mr Rex Walker, Tivoli Theatre operator, who has been laid aside with pleurisy, has returned to duty again.
