His Majesty the King, at an investiture in St. James’s Palace, pinned an 0.8. E. insignia on Mr Childs, the Hammersmith Bridge hero of March 29 and congratulated him on his pluck and perception.
A London cablegram dated March 29 stated that two time bombs exploded on Hammersmith Bridge, damaging the centre. A pedestrian walking on the bridge footpath picked up a box from which he heard crackles. He threw it over into the river, the box exploding before touching the water.
