GOLF NOTES

MAHUNGA CLUB DOINGS

COMMENT ON RECENT PLAY. WINTRY CONDITIONS LAST SATURDAY. • By “Par.”) Members of the Mahunga Golf Club experienced their first taste of real winter conditions whilst playing last Saturday. Conditions could not have been worse and the results handed in were belter than expected. J. P. Farrell, a new member, played extremely well to record 1 under par. By doing so he has headed the list as far for the first qualifying round of the Ladies’ Trophy competition. A. H. Ward played consistent golf to record 81. Out in 40 and home in 41 was good going under the conditions. A. S. McGregor was out in 42 and home in 40. It is anticipated that it will not be long before this player is playing consistently in the 70’s. He is a player of experience who has recently returned to the game after a number of years.

G. R, Ward, by recording a net 73, maintains his ability to play around his handicap. His card would have been better had it not been for a 7 at the second hole. It is pleasing to see the members proceeding with their games in the Captain’s Trophy competition. So far no real hitch has occurred in getting these matches off, which is gratifying to the match committee in view of the fairly strenuous competitive season ahead. Results of the second round arc of interest. W. N. A. Hosking and C. Sandbek finished all square and will replay their game. Hosking turned 3 up on his opponent over 9 holes but Sandbek came to light with a fighting finish and had the game all square at the 17th. A half at the 18th did not decide the issue. R. Lendrum, by accounting for L. J. Thompson the previous weekend was extended right up to the last putt. Lendrum went out in 37 to Thompson's 39. and both turned for home all square. On return Lendrum took 40 to his opponents 41. It was not until the last putt until the issue was decided. R. B. McPherson defeated F. R. Brown 1 up also at the 18th. McPherson was out in 39 to Brown’s 42, where both turned for home all square. A bogey 4 at the 18th gave McPherson the match. McPherson played steady golf to record 2 under his handicap. J. W. Sievers played good steady golf to beat J. W. Dove 2/1. This match was evenly contested throughout and it was not until the final stages of ' the game before Sievers clinched matters. Dove played good golf and the match experience will benefit him before very long. RIVERSIDE GOOD CARDS IN SPITE OF BAD WEATHER. (By “Long Drive.”)

With a cold wind blowing from the south the conditions were not too favourable for good golf on Saturday. Several "players of the Riverside Golf Club handed in much higher cards than usual through not being able to hold their clubs.

G. Beecroft produced the best card, being 1 up in the bogey competition, and with a medal round of 82, 18, 64. *This is particularly good considering the conditions.

Jack Wakelin has been improving every week and has now had his handicap reduced again. This player has been very consistant this year and will be hard to beat in the intermediate championship. J. Bell did not play so well this week. His short game has been letting him down. On the short holes he scored fours, but he scored “birdie" 3 on the long holes. D. Carruthers was playing well on Saturday. He was driving a very long ball from the tees, and would place his approach shots right up to the pin. He finished 2 down on bogey. The highlight of R. Wearne’s round on Saturday was a birdie 3 on Barr's 344 yards.

C. Leigh played a very steady round to defeat R. Wearne in a trophy match, both players being all square at the 17th. Leigh proved the better putter on the last green and took the match one up. R. Hatch also defeated W. Petty in a trophy match played on Saturday. After being all square at the seventeenth Petty’s drive was right over the fence on the 19th, but he failed to make good use of the advantage thus gained. It took him six to hole out, which left Hatch the winner one up.
