HARRIER ACTIVITIES

MASTERTON CLUB. (By "Idle Along.”) On Saturday the annual race for the Keats Trophy will be run from the Park Oval at 2.30 p.m. The Masterton Club will have a hard struggle to retain the trophy. The Hastings Club advise that they will field a very strong team including Tod, Taylor, Alec Taylor. B. Anderson, C. Wright and A. Robertson. The Masterton Club’s mainstays will be W. Pullar, G. Gregory, R. Shaw and W. M. Sellar, while good races can be expected from R. Wyeth, H. Carle, G. Wickens and A. Andrews. Much will depend on the back markers to keep the points down, and every member is urged to do his best in this event. The course will be a measured 6.1 miles over the old championship trail and this run will be a trial for the provincial championships. The selector. Mr J. J. Hunter, will pick the A team from the best runners in this race. Members are reminded that points for the Shaw Rose Bowl will count and all members are eligible to compete for this trophy. The provincial championships, which will be held at Silverstream on July 29, will be run oh different lines to those in recent years. There will be an A grade championship with teams of six nominated, with four Io count. In conjunction with this race a sealed handicap will be held, each team being handicapped on previous performances. In place of the B grade championship a junior championship will be held for runners under 19 years of age. A junior trial race ovei’ 3 miles will be run by the Masterton Club on July 22 and the first six runners in this trial will represent the club at Silverstream. Mr J. Liddall, an old runner and keen supporter of the club, has donated a handsome silver challenge cup for the fastest .time in this trial. An open handicap race will be held on Saturday for the junior boys over one lap of the course. Trophies for first and second in the race have been donated by supporters of the club. R. Reynolds and P. Greenlees will be hard to beat in the race as they have been triers the last few runs in hopes of catching the selector's eye and securing a place in the team to visit Silverstream. A dance is to be held on Saturday evening in honour of the Hastings visitors at the Masonic Hall. The committee is confident the dance will be one of the outstanding functions of the year because of the fact that there will be a good floor, dainty supper and first class music, thus ensuring an enjoyable time for patrons.

KIATERE CLUB. COX CUP CONTEST. Considerable interest is being shown in the race for the Albert Cox Cup to be held on Saturday from the Showgrounds. On the present form of the club's first six runners, Alex MacDonald, last year's winner, will have a hard fight if he is to stave off tile challenges of such men as R. Greeks, J. Laing or W. MacDonald. Greeks, who was the first Kiatere man home in last week's race at Wellington. looks the most likejy contender. but any of the remainder are quite capable of taking the lead and holding it throughout the race. The distance is 5 miles, over a two-lap course. Junior chib members will take part in a 21 mile championship for the Turnbull Cup. In this section, N. Jacobsen, on present form, looks very promising, but on form the next two boys, M. Doyle and F. Sexton, are quite capable of producing a surprise. This run will be held over one lap of the senior trail.
