WEEKEND DEBATE

FIRST CONTEST FOR CHALLENGE CUP. MASTERTON CATHOLIC CLUB’S WIN. The first contest for the “Marcus James Catholic Action Cup,” donated to the North Island District of the Catholic federated clubs and societies of Nevz Zealand for competition between Catholic clubs and societies in the North Island, was held during the weekend. The competing teams were the Masterton Catholic Club and the Masterton Hibernian Society. The Masterton Catholic Club was declared the winner and is thus the first club to hold the trophy. Subjects for the competition were prepared debate, oratory, impromptu speech, elocution and Christian doctrine speech. , The clubs were represented as follow: —Masterton Hibernian Society: Debate —Messrs W. Brady and A. E. O’Leary; oratory, Mr S. Herbert; impromptu speech, Mr J. F. McDonald; elocution, Mi - £■>. Herbert; Christian doctrine speech, Mr J. F. McDonald.

Masterton Catholic Club: Debate, Messrs W. C. Orange and P. Hogan; oratory, Mr P. Hogan; impromptu speech, Mr W. C. Orange; elocution, Miss M. Dwyer; Christian doctrine Speech, Mr W. C. Orange. The awards were as follow: —Debate, Masterton Hibernian Society; oratory, Masterton Catholic Club; elocution, Miss M. Dwyer, Masterton Catholic Club; speech and Christian doctrine, Masterton Catholic Club. “That the recent trend of motion pictures displayed in New Zealand does not tend to improve the morality of the public,” was the subject chosen for the debate.

The adjudicators were: Debate. Mr I. Hart; oratory and elocution. Miss O. R. Sutherland; Christian doctrine speech, the Rev Father N. Moore. The next contest will take place between a team representing the Marist Brothers’ Old Boys’ Association. Wellington, and the Masterton Catholic Club.
