ALEX KYLE WINS
BRITISH AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
DUNCAN DEFEATED IN FINAL. AN EXCITING CONTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, May 27. In the final of the amateur golf championship today the Yorkshireman, Alex Kyle, beat Lieutenant T. A. Duncan, Welsh Guards, 2 and 1. The weather was windy and cloudy. Kyle went round in 80 and 71, and Duncan in 75 and 82. Kyle led Duncan (who is the first Welshman to reach the final) one up at the end of the first nine holes. On the homeward journey both were remarkably accurate. Kyle had eight single putts to his credit at the fifteenth, Duncan having squared the match at the fourteenth. Kyle was bunkered at the. sixteenth and Duncan holed a fiveyarder for a 4. At the eighteenth hole Kyle’s driving let him down and he . finished the first round 2 down. ■ A large gallery saw the second round, Duncan losing the lead through slicing out of bounds at the first and third holes. The pair were neck and neck till the seventh, where Duncan cut a tee shot badly, but again squared the match at the eighth, with two fine woods. Duncan was bunkered at the ninth to stand 1 down. He squared at the tenth, but Kyle recaptured the lead at the short thirteenth, almost holing his tee shot. He lost it at the fourteenth, where he smothered an iron shot and gave Duncan a chance to square. Kyle.went into the lead again at the sixteenth, where Duncan took three putts. ’At the next hole Duncan cut his second out of bounds and Kyle pulled an exciting game out of the fire for victory by 2 and 1.
