HOUSEHOLD HINTS
USEFUL FOR THE HOUSEWIFE. If spots of mildew appear on kid gloves place some small pieces of lump ammonia in a flat tin box and leave the gloves with them, protected by tis-sue-paper, for several days. The ammonia must not be in contact with the gloves. Aluminium is the best container to use when making sweets. Medicine droppers should be used to achieve absolute exactitude when adding flavours. A thermometer is essential to get good results. The black discolouring on the outside of enamelled sausepans calls for caustic soda, applied, of course, with a swab. Strong tartaric acid and water should be used to clean soiled sponges. Soak for 24 hours or longer, rinse well, and dry. A second effort is necessary if the sponge has been neglected. Whiting made into a paste with lemon juice will brighten piano Ifeys. When dry, brush off gently.
Black gloves tend to go white at.the tips of the fingers owing to friction. Mix small quantities of olive oil and ink, and apply with a feather or small brush.
For decorating purposes, hibiscus flowers will last longer without water.
