SIGNIFICANT DEPARTURE. STATEMENT BY LORD HALIFAX. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, April 3. A statement on the international situation was made in the House of Lords by Lord Halifax, who, after recalling the terms of Mr Chamberlain’s declaration in the House of Commons on Friday, explained the circumstances in which the decision to make it had been reached. He added: “Our pledge to Poland marks a new and momentous departure in British policy. We have undertaken this commitment, not in any spirit of hostility to any country, but in the hope and belief that, by doing so, we might strengthen the cause of European stability and peace.”
