PLUNKET SHIELD

CRICKET MATCH AT WELLINGTON. LOCAL TEAM AT THE WICKETS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Plunket shield cricket match, Wellington v. Otago opened on the Basin Reserve this morning in warm weather, but with an overcast sky and a light northerly wind blowing. The wicket was op the easy side when Tindill won the toss for Wellington and opened the innings with Rice shortly after 11 a.m. the bowlers being Silver and Purdue. Both batsmen were cautious in the early stages, but settled down fairly quickly, Tindill reaching double figures in 20 minutes. Leader and Elmes had a turn with the ball, and the latter bowled Rice with the first ball of his second over. The scores at noon were: — WELLINGTON: Ist Innings. Tindill, not out 24 Rice, b Elmes 13 Sheffield, not out 8 Total for 1 wicket 45 A DISASTROUS START MADE ,BY CANTERBURY. IN GAME AGAINST HOLDERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day, In the Plunket Shield match Canterbury made a disastrous start against Auckland, the holders, at Lancaster Park. The home side elected to bat on an easy-paced pitch, but Bellamy cocked up an easy catch at silly mid-on off Cowie’s third ball. Hadlee and Stokes however, fared much better, though Stokes found Matheson’s, first over a difficult one. Hadlee soon opened out and drove with precision. When 18 he was dropped by Weir in the slips off Matheson and again by Whitelaw when he had made 29. Auckland’s fieilding was sharp, and Jackman, Pearson and Postles received applause.
