EXCELLENT TAKINGS
RETAILERS REPORT GOOD BUSINESS.
CHEERFUL AND CAREFREE SPIRIT ABROAD.
Masterton retailers who were interviewed this morning all reported excellent business yesterday and throughout the week. In practically every case last year's returns were exceeded, and one retailer, who had budgeted for a twenty per cent decrease, was able to report returns equal to, if not above those of last year. Others had the satisfaction of recording the best business for some years; one retailer said it was his best year, since 1929. All classes of business seem to be enjoying good trade. “You don’t have to sell, they buy,” said one of those interviewed. “Everyone seems to be so cheerful and carefree,’ ’he added; "there seems to be a real Christmas spirit abroad and that is how it should be.”
Although business was on the slack side yesterday morning on account of rain and was rather slow until 3 o’clock thereafter it was exceptionally brisk until closing time last night, so much so that the takings exceeded those for the corresponding day of last year. Even this morning good business was being reported .
