McNair Snadden (Con).. 11,808 Duchess of Atholl (Ind) 10,495 Following on her criticism of the British Government's Foreign policy, the Duchess of Atholl resigned in order to re-contest the Kinross seat as an Independent. At the general election in 1935 she had a majority of 5,169. COMPETING CLAIMS THE FOREIGN POLICY ISSUE. SEVERE WEATHER LIMITS POLL. (Independent Cable Service.) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, December 22. Sixty-seven per cent of the electorate voted. Many were unable to poll owing to snowbound roads. Mr Snadden said the result represented a vote of confidence in Mr Chamberlain. The Duchess of Atholl said: “I still think the Government’s foreign policy is leading us into grave danger. I think there will be a general election before long, at which I expect to stand again.” The total votes cast for Government candidates in eight by-elections since the Munich conference number 196,686 compared with 176,796 for the Opposition.
