CHINESE FINED

OPIUM CASES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 12. Ten Chinese, all requiring the services of an interpreter, stood in the dock in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, today, before Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., charged with offences involving the possession or the use of prepared opium. They were Ngau Yew, aged 55, gardener; Joe Lum, aged 51, gardener; Gee Pay Wong, aged 44, fruiterer; Ah Kong, aged 33, gardener; Ching Yum Get, aged 52; Jay Gee, aged 55, gardener; Ah Joe, aged 21, fruiterer; Jim Hong, aged 63, fruiterer; Tong Loo, aged 42, gardener; and Yet Young, aged 35, cook. The charges were of being found in possession of prepared opium, and of being found without lawful excuse on premises in Haining Street used for the purposes of smoking opium. Ngau Yew accepted full responsibility as the keeper of the premises. The cases against Jim Hong and Jay Gee, who pleaded not guilty, were adjourned till tomorrow to enable them to obtain the services of counsel.

The remainder pleaded guilty. Tong Loo and Yet Young, who were first offenders, were each fined £l2 10s, in default one month’s imprisonment; the others, having previous convictions involving the use of opium, were each fined £2O, in default two two months’ imprisonment. All were igiven one week in which to pay.
