SILK SOX A HURDLE PROSPECT

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Silk Sox’s four outings this season have produced a win and two seconds and his unplaced effort was on the flat at Waverley recently. He ran a splendid race in the hurdles on the first day at Egmont, beating all but the winner, Iddo, and he improved to win on Saturday when Iddo did not run. Silk Sox bears a robust appearance, and should be improved in condition by his Egmont outings. He looks sure to do well in hurdle races this season.

Glenmure, who was injured when contesting the Winton Steeplechase, has made a good recovery, and she looked big and well when taking part at a meet of the Birchwood Hunt last week. The Panmure mare has shown jumping ability in her few starts to date, and if everything goes well with her this winter she should win races.

Ashaway, who was. recommissioned recently after a short let-up, has been turned out again for the winter months. The hard tracks troubled the Balboa gelding in his training, and he was only seen out four times this season. His half-sister, Silkwood, will also be spelled after the local meeting on Saturday.

Royal Limond is reported to be doing well in his new quarters at Awapuni, and it will be interesting to see if a change of quarters will bring about a change of mood. He jumps battens kindly enough for A. McDonald, and v it is intended to keep him to hurdle racing in the meantime. His mission is the Great Northern Steeplechase in June, and he will hot be asked to face big fences until near the day.

Two high-class hurdlers in Collision and Hunting Star have both been put aside on account of unsoundness, and probably the last has been seen of them on a racecourse.

Jan Ridd made his debut as a hurdler at the Franklin meeting on Saturday and after filling the role of pacemaker for about six furlongs commenced to drift and eventually finished near the ruck. His jumping was good and it would appear, as his stamina improves, that he may pay his way in this department.

Edible, - winner of the Novice Handicap at Randwick on Saturday, is by Limond from Aspic, the dam of Tout le Monde, and Red Rosebud, winner of the Welter Handicap at the same meeting, is by Chief Ruler from White Tulip, an English-bred mare by White Magic. ■

Wild Career was galloped on Saturday and shaped pleasingly over a mile. Apparently his racing at Riverton and Riccarton left no serious effects.

Gold Wren and Possum were schooled over five fences at Riverton on Saturday and both gave a pleasing display. Gold Wren is a gelding by Songbird from Goldfire, by Firearm, a son of Carbine.

Sen Acre won the first race of her carrer when she was successful in the Otaua Handicap at Pukekohe. Saturday’s outing marked her twelfth start this season and the first occasion on which she has paid expenses at a meeting.

Alunga, whose form this season has been a model of consistency, was rewarded for a series of misfortunes when he won the Hawera Handicap at the Egmont meeting. Majority passed him soon after entering the straight and appeared to have the race won, when Alunga came on again and very gamely worried Majority out of first money, This was Alunga’s fifth win for the season and, like most of the Speardance tribe, he is improving with age and stays on well at the end of his races. He is handily enough situated in the weights to add another race or two to his record. He handles* winter conditions well.

The Nelson Cup winner Liane has been a consistent performer this season, and has scored four wins and four places out of 15 stars. She is owned by G. Simpson, and got by Captain Bunsby from Degage, by Kilbroney —. Miss de Vail, by All Red.

Rockfel, winner of this year’s One Thousand Guineas, traces to Carbine on the sire’s side. Felstead, her sire, is by Spion Kop, son of Spearmint, and grandson of Carbine. Spearmint won the Derby in 1906; at an interval of 14 years Spion Kop led the field home. Seven years later Felstead scored.

Aspire is training on ■ and likely to show improvement of form.

Nightdress is again in work following a few weeks’ spell after being added to the list of geldings.

Jolly Beggar has run himself out as a hurdler as the handicappers make him a well-loaded horse. His next opportunity may come in connection with cross-country racing.

During a visit to Australia, Mr R. T. Reid, Hamilton, purchased a colt by Beau Pere from Modiste II and half-brother to Royal Chief. The colt was originally knocked down to Mr W. J. Smith, the owner of Beau Pere, for 850 guineas, and was subsequently acquired by Mr Reid at a higher price. The colt has arrived in Hamilton and it is Mr Reid's intention after his racing career is over, to put him to the stud. Mr Reid has arranged for his brood mare, Comedienne, to visit Beau Pere.

Wagner’s performances at the Riccarton Easter meeting were such that early winning form may be expected from him. For a few days after his recent racing, he seemed to be tied up a little, but he is hitting out freely enough at present and fie bears a welltrained appearance.

Of the 14 two-year-olds that have won £5OO or over this season, six of them were sired by Beau Pere. The Beau Pere stock won £5920 in stakes, and his winning representatives were Peerless, Amigo, Arvarku, Gay Son, Taurangi, Kathbella, Ivar, Sudan, Cherry Plum and Red Shoes.

Flashlight has been schooling over the steeplechase fences lately, and has shaped in most satisfactory fashion. With his speed, he should not be long in winning a race over fences, especially in view of his Riccarton running at Easter. Flashlight has been given every opportunity to develop into a jumper and he may soon open his winning account.

Burwind has been shaping well in his schooling over fences. He has been kept fairly busy this season, and his record reads 15 starts, one win, five seconds and four thirds.

When Mungatoon beat Davolo at Amberley he scored his second win for the season. Early in the season he won the Taumarunui Cup, and his only other placed performance was a second to Galleon in the Oamaru Cup.

When galloped on Saturday at Invarcargill over a mile Galleon pleased more than Amelita and Coxcomb.

Silver Ring is reported to have pulled up sound after his recent races on the West Coast and as he is being handicapped on defeat rather than on top form further successes may come his way.

Hutana, winner of the Telegraph Hack Handicap at Hawera on Saturday, has been very consistent this season, being in the money nine times in a dozen starts this season. He is well enough bred to go on to open deeds, as he is a five-year-old chestnut gelding by the Polydamon horse Ruapapa, out. of the Bunyan—Miss Dix mare Sibford, the dam previously of the the A.R.C. Railway winner Awarere.

Joe Louis, who followed up his Dannevirke success with another convincing win at Hawera last week, is a six-year-old black gelding by Psychology from the Thurnham— Honesty mare Lady Kilham, a member of the famous Hammock family. He is now in his best form and on winter tracks he is well enough to work his way shortly out of hack grade.

Previous to Easter Silver Streak was working very attractively, but a few days before the holiday meetings showed signs of soreness after a gallop. Rather than run any risk, his trainer decided to spell him, and the Paper Money Gelding is now enjoying a rest on his owner’s farm. It is not likely that Silver Streak will be brought in again for a few months, so that the joint will have plenty of time to make a complete recovery.

It is not often that a stallion of the class of Lackham (imp.) comes into the sale ring for open competition (states a Sydney writer). Lackham,' who has been in New Zealand throughout his stud career, was offered at auction at William Inglis .and son, Pty., Ltd.’s stables, but bids did not reach reserve. Later it was announced that Lackham had been secured privately by Mr W. Booth, and will go to the Tatyoon Stud which is-relinquishing the services of Light Brigade (imp.) Lackham will be a companion of Denis Boy (imp). The sire of Mala, Golden Wings and Golden Treasure, Lackham is an upstanding chestnut by Roi Herode from Jeuneuse by Polymelus.

Lalagulli, whose yearling colt by Melfort brought the- highest price (2800 guineas) at the recent sale in New South Wales, boasts a high-class pedigree. She is by Tressady, son of Persimmon and grandson of St. Simon, from Waianui, by Cooltrim, son of Flying Fox, from Sarsa, by Grafton, son of Galopin.

The two-year-old filly Scuffle scored her first win when she won the Novice Stakes at Amberley. She ran six times without getting placed, and her best performance was third to Disdain and Kilrobe in the Autumn Nursery Handicap.

Light Comedy gave a good account of herself in the President’s Handicap at Pukekohe, Seating all but Cheval de Volee, after acting as pacemaker with the latter practically from barrier rise. Light Comedy is gradually returning to

‘her best and she should be right at concert pitch by the time the local meeting draws round. She is on the minimum the first day and should account for more than beat her.
