DEFENCE OF BRITAIN
GOOD PROGRESS BEING MADE WITH PROGRAMME SIR T. INSKIP’S SURVEY (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, April 2. Sir Thomas Inskip, Minister for Coordination of Defence, in a speech last night, said he could not be satisfied with the progress made in the defence programme until he saw his designs completed. That, however, did not mean that good progress was not being made. The expense of the programme was familiar to all—painfully familiar. It was no secret that the figure of £1,500,000 was likely to be exceeded.
“It is a formidable and grim task to anybody who has to foot the bill, but I see no sign of flinching in the nation,’ he said. “We may make our grimaces when we note the sum it is going to cost, but I have not seen a single complaint that we are spending too much. That is the spirit of the British people.”
