NEW ZEALAND CHEESE

LOSS FROM BLUE MOULD. Complaints of the widespread occurrence of blue mould in New Zealand cheese were made at a meeting of the Northern Council of Grocers’ Association, England, recently. The question was raised by Mr Cocker, who said defects which had occurred in New Zealand cheese recently were a serious matter from the point of view of the Dominion itself. Many members were fairly big dealers in New Zealand cheese.

For the last few months there had been a change, which had been experienced all over the country, and blue mould had been found running right through many New Zealand cheeses. In many cases there had been serious loss to the trader. Agents offered to redress any loss, but, as practical men, traders had to do their best with a cheese when they got it on their counters. Nevertheless, it was not in the condition it ought to be, and the way it had to be cut was not pleasing to the eye. One agent was now refusing to stock New Zealand cheese, but many could not afford to take this action, as it was a big selling line in their business. He thought representations should be made to the New Zealand Dairy Sales Division. It was decided to act in accordance with Mr Cocker’s suggestion. Questioned on the subject, Mr G. W. Rodden, assistant London manager of the Dairy Sales Division, said certain complaints had been received of blue mould in cheese from the end of the season's make. It was quite a common feature at the end of the season after cheese had been in store some time. Present supplies were quite free of it.
