NATIVE FARMERS

TENURES OF ROTORUA HOLDINGS According to advice received from the acting-Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon F. Langstone, the Board of Native Affairs is still considering the question of the tenure upon which settlers on Maori land development schemes will take over unit holdings. The matter is of considerable interest in the Rotorua district and in the Horohoro area, which was the first area to be brought under development. In this district a number of Maori farmers have now reached the stage where they are ready to take over unit farms. In a letter dealing with the matter the Minister stated that the form of settlers on Maori land development tenure to be ultimately granted to schemes generally had been under consideration by the Board of Native Affairs for some time past, but no definite conclusion had yet been reached. The matter had many difficulties, but the Board of Native Affairs hoped shortly to be in a position to grant tenures to Maori farmers in terms of the Native Land Amendment Act, 1936. especially in those cases where the consolidation of the lands had assisted in simplifying titles.
