It is pleasing to bote that ladies are taking an inteiest in political matters. At the meetings of Mr Bunny and Mr Buchanan at Qreytown several were present in the gallery and appeared to take much interest in wbat was said. The attendance at the meetings of both candidates were large, those of Mr Bu« obanan being fat in excess of Mr Bunny’s in each town.

The Bangitihei Advocate cays that lungworm has made its appearance in one of the sheep Hooks in the lower Bangitikei district, and a severe loss lias already been sustained from its depredations. The English Church at Greytown and Us pretty surronnding of trees and shrubs has often been admired by visitors. We are glad to see that oat Wesleyan friends are now beautifying the ground in front of their church,' On Wednesday several persons spent the day in real bard work-foremost among them being the Bev J Ward—in digging up the soil and putting up a fence. We may yet live to see the Wesleyan Church orna< mooted with evergreen trees and presenting a similar appearance to the English Church. The Borneo Catholics have a good piece of ground around their church and several trees have been planted and are thriving well, but they are in want of a little attention.

Mr Luke Ward’s house at Awahuri, Peild j ing, was burned the other morning. It was insured in the Equitable for £IOO. The bop kiln, insured for £SO, was saved. There is no information as to the origin of the fire, as Ur Ward and his family were at work on the farm.

A man named Samuel Smith, a dyer, com* mitted suicide at Dunedin, by ontting hie throat with a pocket knife. He was a man of intemperate habits, and very dieagreeable in his cups, especially to his wile.

A cottage belonging to MrD Cameron, and occupied by George Trass, at Manaia, near Mastorton was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night. The family had a narrow escape. The building was insured in the New Zealand office for £SO. The loss is about £IOO more than the insurance.
