Twinkle! Twinkle, Little Star!

The Wairarapa Star of Monday last contains a leader in which the Editor of that journal is at considerable pains—prose and poetical—to assert that tbe Siandabd is edited by Mr J Evieon. We regret that tbe Editor of the Star should be so susceptible to boazing ; we regret it for bis owu sake, because we do not like to see him made ridiculous—and perhaps worse. No one who knows the Editor of the Star, however, would take offence at anything be says, hut then everyone does not know him. The Star, we may mention, is published at Uasterton, and those who know its editor know also what a truthful, humble, genial, gentlemanly oreatnre he is. Those who know him know how be is a refined and elegant scholar, a perfect master of (his own) language, and a poet. They know also he is incorruptible ; that his views ou all subjects are tbe resnlt of extensive reading and that as a “ journalist ” and politician he is so transparently honest that a child might see through him. Tbe earn for which be cannot be politically bought has never yet been ascertained, Of coarse those who do not know tbe editor of the 1 Star ’ and judge him by bis writings only, might —because true greatness has ever its detractors—perhaps deem him to be, in bis jomnalietic capacity, an unscrupulous, uneducated, foul-mouthed bully. Therefore, knowing bow good that Editor really is we deplore the tone of his article of 27th instant, fearful that those unacquainted with bis Editorial virtues and graces may think that be and that “ l.ord of tbe Lion Heart” (as tbe Editor of the Star calls the other Observer) bad used Mr Evison's name lor tbe purpose of importing religions acrimony into a political contest.. Of course, while tbe Editor of the Star was lauding to the skies those two notorious Freethinkers, Messrs Stout and Ballance, such conduct would be that of a journalistic pariah, and therefore conduct of which the Editor of the Star is incapable. Some journalists who do not know the Editor of the Star might say that no one but a literary blackguard and dealer in garbage would if he could, attempt to reveal the editorship of any other paper published in his district, but would if worth his salt as an editor and a man—reply to bis opponent's arguments, if he could. But we who know the Editor of tbe Star can make allowances for him. Ex ungue porcus ?
