This match took place at Oreytown on Saturday before a goodly number of onlookers, who at intervals cheered the different sides with which they sympathised aa they respectively gained advantage. The Mastertou men arrived iu Qreytewn by brake at about 3 o’clock, and no time was lost in repairing to the Greytown public reserve where the Masterton men won the toss and Day kicked off against the wind and towards the western goal ; it was a vigorous kick and the bail went quite half way. C Beard promptly secured it and in passing to Webster a hand bail resulted ; after then some fast forward play ensued aqd Ifoydhouse stopped a grand rush of Joe Terry’s H Tally for Greytowu in turn collared Roydhouse. A Udy next sepnred a mirk, E Udy kicking quite 60 yards towards the Greytowu gu.|l. Whatman secured the ball and made a good return kick. Webster next did some good passing to E Udy, who passed to Terry and be was going " like an day clock " until intercepted by G Perry who got away with a good dribble; Whatman next passing to W Perry wbo very nearly carried the ball over the line for Mastertou, only being stopped by W Tuliy on the brink, wbp was playing a enoerb three. quarter back for Qreytown ; C Heard, who was in grand form, among the forwards dribbling grandly and making good gronnd until 'V Perry made a great punt wbicb sent the ball out of bounds and making np some good lost dislanoe for Masterton. After tbe throw iu a scrim was formed from which Webster -merged until stopped in his bold career by UtyJhouse who was a tower of strength us onu id the backs of his side. Walter Tally having relieved Roydhouse of his charge, dribbled well forward until W Perry claimed a mack on neutral ground. Iu the uext scrim Goldsmith showed up well and the Greytown forwards made an excel-, leut rally, A Udy making a great attempt to reclaim grouqd until cellared by F Felling. A Udy next got a mark, and a scrim ensued on neutral ground, Webster working like one inspiied by Mephistopholee and extricating the oval with the utmost dexterity, passing to C Beard who with J Beard now worked the leather well forwa' 1 and Webster seconding the motion by some real bard and tough draggling ; but Hqqnslow was about, and Hounslow was the very giant of hia team, ha was almost i tresis table aud then the coveted article of attack was in Oreytowoa 23s as if by magic. H Tally misaiog % good pass from Goldsmith, he had theu a good show for a big ruu. A Udy tried to improve tbe occasion but Boyd house marked him too closely and be was arrested. Holmwood next appropriated tbe inflated aatiole and tried to force hia way tbiough the ranka of bis opponents, but without avail. W Tuly uext stopped a good forward dribbling rush from Masterton by shunting off the ball in tbe nick of time ; E Udy was then cheered for a good relhrn kick, anil W Tally also followed up with a kick out of bounds. After tbe uext scrim sod some stubborn packs with equal advantage to botu sides. Terry made another dive to get clear, but Terry’s mistake in this match was that he preferred to carry the ball thin to kick, consequently C Perry was around about him and he bad (o succumb; W fully in

turn waa too much lor Perry nod made the rush "f the day for hi* G !-.• V.tl jw ■ wing* shoulu have come nm-id no n.cr toliisrrioforcemeut, consequently llouuilow, who took possession, mide a good return kiok o»<r the heads of the Greytown lorwardi; Kibblewhite did a good dribble but Walter Fully waa agaiu about and made a firing kick out of bounds ; this waa a decided advantage and after the throw in, the Greytown men by good combined action soon bad the egg shaped object in the 2Vs of Maaterton. Excitement then became frantic among the spectators aa it waa thought that then Greytown bid fair to draw first blood ; bat hero the Greytown men were pUviag one man abort and that, a good man, Waller Tally one of the aa yet "big men" of the team bad juat been hurt and had temporarily to retire, lUra waa a calamity for Greytown at thia juncture and of thia Maaterton of eourae were not alow to take advantage, Welch and Polling dnbMiog welt back for their side. C Beard then showed some equally good dribthing in the other direction and after tome loose play and owiug to the Masterton back's inability to paas, Greytown made aom* good ground. Joe Ferry ih-nj made a hard attempt to get through and ttyan haring missed a pass, Welch and Hounslow dribbled the ball away past the half flag, and after some loose play it wont out. Another eerim took place after which Pelting made a great rush but omitted to paea in time ; the play was close down upon the Ur ytowu goal line now, and Greytown were forced down alter e scrim oo the line ; E Udy after this made a good dribble forward and then the danger to Greytown for the time was over, until W Perry took possession, passing to MeKenxie, who emerged from the crowd with the oval at bis toe, working welt forward, Welch then essayed to rush but had to pass to C Perry ; Welch did a good dribble, and C Bannister got a mark ; 0 Perry kicked and in the quick follow up of which W Tally, (who bad resumed) Webster and Goldsmith shone with great lustre. A Udy, C UJy and Connolly were also doing tine work lor their side The ball having been worked out, with advantage to Greytown, another scrimmage took place in which the su|>erior weight of the Masterton men told in their favor. Webster, after the ball was worked out, got a mark from Holmwood ; then Cox made a rash for Maaterton, but in passing threw forward. MeKenzie than took matters in band and passed to C Perry who very adroitly slipped by H Tally and secured a try. Young Tu _. made a commendable effort to stop Perry hot the fortune of war was sgainst him. C Perry made a good kick tor goal but it was a difficult angle and the acorn waa not advanced. After the try. C He irl drihblnd the ball well for warn, Webster having worked it vigorously out of the scrim. Soon after Webster got a mark ; the kick ont gained some ground lor the reds but W Perry now got it and was doing a leaping rush over the heads of the Greytown forwards until he was made to kiss the ground by U Tully. In return from Welch U Tully kicked well forward, but tbs Maaterton men, charging with their heavy forw irds bore down upon their opponents and soon again were invading the Greytown 25. Terry, from a paes by G Humphries, made another rush; he was stopped by Hounslow anil ball time was called. After the spell, sides being changed, E UJy kicked off for Greytown and McKenzie quickly returned the leather. W Tully made a dart with the ball and Hounslow got on off side, a mistake which several of the Masterton men were repeatedly guilty of. After another scrim Humphries very nearly got the ball over the line and it was thought that it was Greytown turn to score, but Hounslow stopped him nearly on the line, returning the ball in grand style. The Greytown men were now playing like Trojans, and Hnmphriss, 0 and J Beard, Webster, S Tully, and Goldsmith were making almost superhuman efforts to i score a try fur their side, but their flanks were if anything weak at times, and Itoydhooee, who was playing fur Masterton, took great advantage of this fact and saved bis side by right down bard work : Welch, the six footer (with a little over), again displayed his powers of dribbling and Masterton were now forcing their opponent* back ; a series of scrimmages then followed close upon the Greytown goal line, Joe Terry once taking the ball away, but McKenzie passed it to Dyer; Hounslow afterwards shewing up well and being vigorously resisted by Terry who collared him when again nearly on th« line. W Pwrry ■« tern passing to Dyer ; G Humphries next being collared by Holmwood, and then another rush by Joe Terry who passed to Goldsmith who was brought to bay by Boydbouse, and then the ball waa sent back to Greytowo’e quarters, but Web- , ster agaiu came to the rescue and pasesd to Goldsmith who was next bailed op by Roydbonse. A Udy, then secured the ball end made a grand forward kiok, which waa followed np hy Oonoolly, until Hounslow again made a rush for Greytown territory, G Parry showing ap well in support; bat Webster interposed and than the Greytown forwards charged the Masterton phalanx with immense prowesa and worked back again until Welch passed to Hounslow, who made the rush sublime which Sep Tally, emid the cheers of tbs Oreytowa’s, stopped in ea admirable manner, passing to Kyan who darted forward and 1 passed to Webster, but now things were looking very gloomy for Greytown as the Beds ' ware eridently working a forlorn hope, their backs ware now getting tagged although their | forwards could nut be rubbed out ; What- ; man took the ball through by a huge effort : from outside a straggle, it appeared to have 1 been dead when be pieked it op. evidently momentarily missed in the fray ; however be carried it across the line bat a dead ball was allowed ; a great quantity of book ward and forward play then ensued, in which Terry, Webster, 0 Beard, C Udy, end Goldsmith for Greytown, and Hoanalow, 0 and W Perry, U Bannister, and Kibblewbite for Masterton, distinguished themselves and then time was called and the game, whiob bat bv the merest of Qukes, sboald have been a draw resulted in a win (or Masterton by a try to nil. Tbe match was exceedingly well eonteeted, and to a disinterested onlooker tbe teams must have respectively appeared well selected The Masterton men, by reason of their average ages and weight, most have had nn« doubtedly a slight advantage of their opponents, but theie was evidently a point in favor of the Greytown men and that waa superior knowledge of the game, as they «et« not so frequently checked (or being “ off side " as their opponents and they were not so much disposed to be on tbe ball aa their antagonists ; were all the Greytown baoks a* formidable as the forwards, they would hav* won hands down. Tbe honor of the Greytown footballers was (ally sustained by C Beard, W Fully, J Beard, Webster and Edward Udy. Charles and All Udy, and J Terry. G Humphries, and Goldsmith were also a credit to their team, and 8 and H Tully and Oonuolly deserve every praise fur their efforts, being young players, to do their utmost ; but with such old hands aa th* Perrys, Hounslow, Bannister, Uoydbonse, Kibblewbite and McKenzie as antagonists, —II tn .A.Kl* lntl,l lltwir AW*.
