HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. THE FIVE MILES TARIFF OVER THE RIMUTAKA. Mr Beetham asked the Minister for Public Works on Friday if the Government will consider, during the recess, the advisability of discontinuing the addition of five miles to tho tariff charges on the Welliugton- Woodville line. The Minister replied that the working of the indine section cost £6OOO per annum, and that for the present ho could not recommend tho reduction. PAYMENTS FOR LAND. Mr Buchanan asked the Minister of Lauds whether he will so arrange that the periodical payments under the doferred payment and perpetual lease systerns can be made through the post offices, as well as by the methods at present stipulated? Tho Minister said arrangements had boon made, and facilities would bo extended from time to time. There would be no objection to receiving payments wherever there was a money order office. ALTERING TlfE RIMUTAKA ROUTE. Mr Fitzhorbert asked tho Minister for Public Works if he will tako under his immediate consideration the advisability of altering tho Wellington and Mastertou Railway-liuo between the Upper Hutt and Feathcrstou, so as to avoid tho present dangerous and expeusivo route over the Summit ? Tho Minister for Public Works said the Departmeut had had the matter under consideratiou on several occasions, and it was still being considered. He could not say what the cost would be. CROSS’ CREEK FIREWOOD. Mr Buchanan asked the Minister for Public Works whether he will arrange so that firewood trucks may bo loaded at tho Cross’ Creek siding of the Welling. ton-Mastortou lino ? The Minister was understood to state that the arrangement could not bo made.
