This Council met at Carterton on Saturday. Present—Ors W Booth (chairman), Coleman Phillips, John Tally, W 0 Buchanan, H Bunny, H R Bunny, H Braithwaite, A Matthews and J Martin, jun. The Engineer’s report was read aud comprised the following matters GLADSTONE TO WAINCIOBU BOaD. Contract No. 6 (Heagerty’s)— Formation and culverts were completed, except the two outlet drains, on the 6th of April last, and the time for (be maintenance of the road was up on the 7th of May. Previous to the latter date a few small slips occurred and were not cleared away, subsequently more extensive slips occurred, and several embankments which were made daring the dry weather subsided considerably. Up to within a few days of the 7th May last the toad was perfectly clear and in good order. In reference to No. 7 contract, the engineer said that the contractor was entitled to a progress payment of L 55. He also stated in reference to contract No. 10, that the contractor, Mr Greenaway, declined to proceed with the work. He also suggested that the logs should be cleared from the Hurunuiorangi channel near the bridge. Mr Heagerty, who was present, was called, and he explained (fiat the slips ou bis contract, No. 6, occurred after bis time for maintenance had expired, After these explanations were given by Mr Heagerty, Or H. Bunny moved and Cr U. K. Bunny seconded, that Mi Ueagerty'g balance he paid, and that ho bo employed to remove the slips on the toad. Cr Buchanan said it was a matter oi funds.

obtain a legal opinion, that opinion migbt not be north the paper it was written on ; be considered it a most important question ; he would add to bis motion that the Council confer with the two Hoad Boards as to how certain roads are legalised by certain numbers of year’s usage, asking them to fully consider the question, and the County Council would be happy to act with them is obtaining a legal opinion in the matter. The motion with the latter words added was agreed to. Cr Phillips said some valuable information would probably be obtained as to whether all the Lower Valley roads were legalised or not. Gr Bunny said the Boad Boards coaid select oases in their respective districts to submit for an opinion. COST OJ WAIHENOA DEVIATION. The demand of the Featherston Hoad Board lor pari cost of {deviation, was referred to the Public Works Committee. CONTRIBUTION TO HOSPITAL BOARD. Cr Buohanan said be understood that the Board reqnired to levy hall of L2S on the contributory local bodies. Or Bunny said the amounts were passed at a meeting of the Board held at Masterton on May 25th. He had communicated with the secretary requesting him to ask the chairman to postpone the meeting, so as to allow all the members a chance to attend. He believed the application for the postponement was forwarded, but no'notice was taken and the meeting was held. Cr Buchanan said he wished to remind Cr Bunny that the resolution levying the contributions on the local bodies was passed at a meeting held at Greytown, at which all the members were present. Cr Bunny proposed and Cr Braitb waite seconded, That half the amount be passed for payment. Agreed to.

UNITED CHARITABLE AID BUABn. Cr Bunny moved and Cr Braithwaite seconded that the first instalment to the Charitable Aid Board be paid. Carried. tenders. The following tenders were received No 11 contract, Msrtinborough-P&haua, Hard, net and Co., £180; Leveriok sod Co., £2 13s per chain ; Richard Bolston 28s per chain, £l4l Is, accepted ; the engineer’s estimate was about £l6O ; Oyster Shell Creek, Gardner and Co., £49, (£3 18s per chain), accepted ; A Leviok £50145. sundries. Or H B Bunny moved that the L 5 extra only be charged to Mr Sexton after the «x piring of his present lease. Agreed to. Several accounts were passed lor payment. Cr Matthews proposed as there was not much business to be transacted, that the Council adjourn until the second week in August. Seconded by Or Bunny and carried.
