At a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce hold last Friday some figures, relating to wool were quoted by the President in his address. (Jur sheep farmers will be interested in a perusal of them. Total number of bales received into London from 1885 1886 North Island .. .. 100,900 101,325 South Island .. >■ 136,168 152,781 237,308 257,109 Of which quantity cross' breds totalled .. 127,000 113,200 It is important to note the following comparisons between the quantities in bales of Australian and New Zealand cross-bred wools catalogued in London during the past eleven years : 1876 .. .. 19,600 .. 52,700 1877 .. .. 61,000 .. 71,700 1878 .. .. 69,500 .. 97,500 1879 .. .. 77,100 91,600 1880 .. 71,100 .. 92,600 1881 .. .. 93,500 .. 91,500 1882 .. 78,500 .. 97.500 1883 .. ~ 88,500 .. 116,000 1881 .. .. 80,200 .. 116,800 1885 .. .. 75,000 .. 127,000 1886 .. .. 69,000 .. 113,200 This indicates that while New Zealand has been steadily increasing the production of cross-bred wools, the tendency in Australia has been in the opposite direction. The growth of cross-bred wool in Australia has not answered expectations, owing to the unsuitability of the climate. This circumstance should encourage our farmers in maintaining and extending their cross-bred flocks, more especially as the demand for cross-bred wool has been more sustained and subject to lesser fluctuation than merino. As there has been considerable misapprehension on the question of the enhancement of wool values, the following figures are m.-.uuci ; "o : ) imrino I .-...rivAvcrwc 1 Cf.-asy Eeouted l-"j ■ Nuv i m om lui,. !., -id 10-t I--.. ~ ~ '.ld Hid 1807. .UiU' hj .'i pril HVcr,i{-;c rates, about .. .. 9Jd 17d Lowest point was reached in March April, 1886 ..
