At a late meeting to elect a School Committee, Mr Fielder said, “ I think this is a subject ou which all parents are interested, and 1 was very glad to notice ou the occasion of the last races that the committee only gave a holiday on the first day. I think the less our children know about races the better. (Warm ‘ hear, hears.’) I think it will be a very bad thing for New Zealand if our children grow up to look upon race days as gala days.’ ’ He moved, “ That in the opinion of this meeting it is very undesirable that any holiday should be given to children attending the Napier District School on the occasion of race days, and that the committee be requested to give effect to this resolution." The reading of this motion was followed by loud “hear, hears" all over tho theatre, and it was carried almost unanimously.
