Volunteering

THE FEATHERBTUN BE VIEW.

The animal insjioctiou and Birthday Review of the Wairarapa Battalion of Rifle Volunteers takes place tomorrow at Featherstou, which is a most suitable place for the pur] rose. Every year each town in the Valley is chosen In turn for this demonstration, and generally when the weather is favorable there is a large number of lookers-on who make this annual event a special holiday. The Mastertou company will doubtless be accompanied by their Brass Gaud; the other companies in the Valley do not at present jxjssess a baud, although Irotb at Featherstou and Greytown there are very creditable bauds which would be in every way suitable to play the marches and would bo quite an acquisition to the Ritles in each place. It is expected that shortly the private band at Greytown may arrange to become an adjunct toths Corps, but nothing definite has yet been decided upon in that direct ion. At any rate if “Queen’s weather” prevails on Queen’s Birthday, tomorrow, no doubt Featherstou will assume quite a lively and gala appearance and the pretty little town will be visited by sight seers from all parts of the Valley on pleasure bent. It is stated that good arrangements have been made for the proper refreshment accommodation of Ihe troops, and it is ho[)od that rumor will prove correct and be a pleasing contrast to the way the men have been treated in other parts of the district on former occasions. The Faatherston hospitality is now about to be tested, and it is sincerely to be hoped that the volunteers will upon this occasion have no reason to be discontented with their reception. A day’s outing, if the weather is fine, will be acceptable to all the residents in the Wairarapa, and this annual gathering oftentimes is the means of causing friends to meet who, otherwise might not have the same opjrortuuity for years. So it is not only “ A day for the Queen ” but it may be the moans of providing a day’s relaxation and enjoy, ment for ourselves and it is certain that numbers will avail themselves of the event. The volunteers will all require to he present under pain of having to forfeit twenty shillings to them compauy, and the new regulation will not allow any option to the Commanding Officer in this respect without very valid rein ous can bo assigned for the absence of the volunteer, and these reasous of course will besiekuoss, for which a doctor’s certificate will be required, or incapacity from any cause that reudori the nou-attoudancc compulsory or impossible. The I’apawai and the Greytown companies will muster at 8 a.m. to proceed per train to Featherstou.
