Serious Railway Accident at Melbourne.
FOUR PERSONS KILLED AND TEH SERIOUSLY INJURED.
Melbourne, May 11. The 6.40 p.m. express from Melbourne to Brighton collided tonight with the preceding trem between the Prahan and Windsor stations, at a short distance from the Utter. Four persons were killed by the oolliiioa, vie , the driver and stoker of the express, Mrs Anderson, the wife of a chemist at Windeer, and Mrs Foster, the wife of Dr Foster, of South Yarre. Eight or ten other passengers were seriously injured. Mr Parkas, of tbo Bauk of Australasia, was among those in. jured.
DISTRESSING DETAILS.
May It. By the railway collision near Windsor five persons have been killed and over 60 injured. The killed are the driver and the stoker of tbe express train, and three passengers— Mr William Rioting, Mrs Foster (wile of Dr Foster, of South Yarra), and Mr E. S. Parke* (auperintendeut of the Bank of AnatralaMa), who had both legs broken, and died while under amputation. Two of tbe injured are in a hopeless condition. The oauae of the accident was thus The first train had become disabled by an aoeident to tbo brake, a Westinghouae. The express, which »a* following, got a signal, " All right,” f« ni Prahran, and in turning a sharp curve in entering Windsor, sew the lights of the fi it trein. The impact of tbe two train* w « tremendous. The engine of the express w • smashed to atoms, and the driver and flip* man were killed instantaneously. The following peseeogeri are seriousp' injured Mr Wm O. Lemariere, laceration of the brain, (condition hopeless ; Mr Wife Turner, of St Kilda, paralysis, conditio* hopeless ; Mr Cosme Newberry, fracture of the collarbone and injury to spine ; Mr Brown, Government Geologist of South Australia, bad shaking and severe scalp wound ; Mr Scobie Gair, solicitor, is slightly injured. The names of the driver and btokoi. who were killed, aro respectively Frederick Masks!) aud James M’Nab. Intense eioitument prevailed in town last night wheu the news of the accident became knewu, as the train which leaves Flinders Street at 6.40 p m. it alweya filled with business men living in the suburbs. Latest advices state that those injured are progressing favorably. The Herald state* that the number of tbe injured is 87, many of them, however, being only slightly hurl. The driver and stoker of the express war* both burned to death by the furnace.
