An old gentleman who had provoked the hostility of a fashionable lady whom he had known in boyhood, was as'ked by his wife what lie had done to incur the lady’s displeasure. " Nothing at all,” responded the immeent old man ; "on the contrary, 1 was very cordial to her, and spoke of Hie time when 1 used to carry her to school nearly half a century ago.” His wife threw up her hands in amazement, and murmured : “ How stupid von men are.”
