School Committee Elections.

GREYTOWN

The annual meeting ol householders convened by the Board ol Education lor the purpose of electing a school committee for the year ensuing was held at the Greytown schoolroom, on Monday night. There were about 40 persons present.

Mr P. Cotter, chairman ol the late school committee, read the advertisement calling the meeting and also tue report and balance sheet of the last year’s proceedings.

Mr Cotter also read the attendance roll showing the attendance of members at meetings as follows :—Messrs Black 4, Thompson 12, Udy 6, Trotter 13, Cotter 14, Kimberley 1, Muir 7, Clifton 3. and Hebley 4. The two latter gentlemen were elected in the places oi Messrs Black and Kimberley retired. Mr Cotter said he might state that the cesspools in the school grounds which have been a great nuisance have been attended to, boxes having been substituted for the open drains and arrangements had been made for the proper attention to the sanitary matters connected with the school; he asked the meeting to appoint their Chairman.

Mr Cotter proposed and Mr Webster seconded Mr G. Wyett as chairman ol the meeting and Mr Wyett was thereupon appointed.

The Chairman read the minutes of the last annual meeting, which were confirmed. Mr E. Gray asked for the minutes of the special general meeting of householders.

Mr Cotter said no record had been kept ol that meeting ; tbe annual statutory meeting was convened by tbe Board of Education, but that meeting was merely called by tbe committee.

The report and balance sheet were adopted as read. Mr Brooks said he would like to hear eome information about the cadet corps. Mr Cotter said that the cadet corps was quite outside the functions of tbe school committee, but said he had once visited the school at tbe time of parade and the Brill Instructor expressed much satisfaction at the efficiency ol the cadets.

Mr Webster asked why tbe children had not received a treat, and why school prizes bad not been presented lately, as is usually the case with other schools.

Mr Cotter said it was purely on account of the laxity of the committee. He and Mr Trotter, who travelled from a distance, bad great difficulty during the year to get some members to attend committee meetings, it was decided to give prizes when the school resumed, but members would not attend tbe meetings when he begged them to do so ; that was tbe only reason why these matters had been neglected. Mr H. Udy, junr., said he wished to explain that the reason of his not attending more meetings was because he resigned after tbe special meeting.

Mr Cotter said Mr Udy’s resignation was not accepted. Mr Udy said be received no notice to that effect. Some discussion ensued as to the references made by Mr Cotter in respect to a late chairman not having pat certain items in the balance sheet under separate headings, Mr Cameron taking exception to Mr Cotter’s remarks. Mr Cotter said he did not intend to cast reflections upon any past chairman, but Mr Dorset had informed him that certain items were to be particularised which had not been formerly done on account of tbe chairman having drawn cheques for a lamp sum, which was not in accord with the regulations of the Board, as cheques had to be drawn, however small, for each item. His remarks bad no reference at all to Mr Black. Mr Cameron said be was satisfied with tbe explanation given by Mr Cotter. Mr Cameron thought it very unfair to the head master that tbe urinates of the special meeting were not kept.

Mr Trotter said that the meeting ended in confusion and jumble. Messrs Cotter, Johnston, Trotter, Hebley, Brooks, H. J. Thompson, J. Lewis, Brsggins, and W. B, Thompson were proposed and seconded as members o< the new committee and the election resalted as follows:—T. Johnston3o with li) voters,?. Cotter, jnnr., 26 with 19 supporters, W. Brooks 25 with 18, J. R. Hebley 23 with 80, P. Trotter 22 with 17, J. Lewis 21 with 8, W. R. Thompson 21 with 16 voters. There were 7 informal papers, the unsuccessful candidates were J. Braggins 20 with 8 voters, R. J. Thompson 17 with 17. Messrs Loasby and Webster were the scrutineers.

Mr Loasby asked to what purpose it was proposed to put the L2O raised by entertainments for the benefit of the cadets.

Mr Porritt said that the cadets wonld get their uniforms with the money, but he was now only waiting for the Government to supplement it. Mr Loasby moved and Mr Webster seoon> ded that the committee be asked to take interest in the affairs of the cadets.

Mr Johnston supported the proposition; he thought the committee should assist Mr Porritt in the matter.

Mr Forritt said the Qreytown cadets wen more efficient than any other cadets in tbi Talley. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Web ster that the report and balance sheet b< posted up in tbe school by the incoming com' mittee at least one week before the nezi annual meeting. Mr E. Gray said it was very necessary that tbe householders should know tbe ezacl I details of tbe report and balance sheet befon the meeting, so as to be in a position to dis' cuss the business at the meeting, he woult like to see it printed. I Mr K J Thompson's nomination was it error, as that gentleman, who was absent, I bad determined not to stand tor re-election. At a meeting of the new committee subsequently held, Mr P.
