Cricket.

GREYTOWN V, MASTERTON.

Last Saturday witnessed one of the best matches that has ever taken place between these two clubs, resulting in a win (or Grey, town, on the first innings, by 44 runs, time not allowing it to be played cut. The match, which was played in Masterton, on the oval commenced a little efter eleven, the home team batting first, and were not disposed of till the total had reached 102, towards which number Littlejohn, McKenzie and Stokes, by patient cricket, assisted considerably, extras ebowing 14. Their second innings was even better than the first, Littlejohn and Robison, who batted first not being separated tilt over 111 rnns bad been scored, both playing really good cricket (or their scores, their ontting being especially clean and without giving a chance. Perry also batted steadily in bis not nut of 25 ; extras 13. The innings, with three wickets to fall, being 156. Qreylown's only innings produced 146, Beard, J. Judl and J. Hawke sharing scoring honors between them. The fielding of both teams was very good, Jodd making two splendid catches (one left handed), and Webster, one in the long field ; Cox also took a couple of smart catches; Stokes (Masterton) and Hawke (Greytown), behind the wickets were pretty good, but ip bowling there was little to choose, the visitors evidently suffering from want ol practice, The most noticeable feature of the match was the excellence of the batting of both teams, though Robison and Littlejohn must be accorded the palm. Daring the mat' hj Greytown sent down 104 overs, during which Judd took 10 wickets for 96 runs (not so good an average as usual), Cuff 4 for 14, J Judd 2 for 14, Hawke 1 for 23. Masterton—--58 overs, Iggulden (fast) 8 wickets (or 34 runs, Perry 3 for 41, Jackson (fast) 1 for 23; Greytown put on seven bowlers in the second innings, (our in the first, Masterton six bowlers. It may not be out of place to mention that only the wioket keeper is allowed to wear pads in the field. There was not a large attendance of spectators to witness the match, which was captained by Hawke (or Greytown, and McKenzie for Masterton. Lnncb was provided on the ground for both teams (not for the boys around, though some of them seemed to think so). The wioket was a good one, cocoa matting being used. Bad judgment ran three Greytown men out. A decided acquisition to the ground is a well with a force pump for watering the ground, but if not protected with some sort of shed it will uot be a pump long, judging by the way the juveniles amused themselves with it on Saturday, The Masterton crioketsra purpose turfing a considerable portion ol the ground, so that next year they should have a fine wicket. The visitors were driven to and fro in Mr Jones’s (Foresters’ Arms Hotel) brake by Mr J W Hawke, home being reached about eight o'clock, after a very pleasant day’s outing, the drive home being enlivened by the pyrotechnic-like display caused by bash fires and clearings going on. The following are the scores;—
