Mr Cull was voted to the chair, and the usual routine business of passing accounts, receiving the Secretary's and Treasurer’s reports, Ac., was then gone through. The Eev Mr Western was appointed to represent the Trustees as Hospital Visitor during the ensuing four weeks.

About half-past 3 o’clock yesterday morning, McPherson's soda-water factory in Cambridge-Terrace, Christchurch, was destroyed by fire. Mr. McPherson was seen at the beginning of the fire, but not after. The body of a man, charred beyond recognition, but believed to be his, was found in an upper room.

The Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, will meet at Greytown, on Monday next, 14th inst., at 12.30n00n. The directors olthe Wanganui Meat Company have decided to erect refrigerating works uc the Heads. Mr A Booth of Carterton, and Mr M Wilton of Masterton, have promised to send their exhibits of pot plants to the Greytown Show tomorrow.

Mr W. Nichols, of Featheraton, is now the owner of one of the nicest and most perfectly finished residences in the South Wairarapa district. On Saturday our representative was shown over the premises, and was surprised to find the appointments so excellently and elaborately arranged. The contract was undertaken by Messrs Brown and Bogets, of Masterton, and this job will probably te° main a standing advertisement of their excellent workmanship for some years to come ; the material used is of the best available quality and the finishing touches bear evidence of having been executed by skilled workmen. Mr Fannin is the architect, and Ur Nichol avows openly that he is delighted with the result of that gentleman’s design. A party of gentlemen who happened to be in the town on Saturday also took occasion to inspect the premises and all were surprised at the very reasonable cost of the whole work (under L 1000). The house is fitted with electric bells, haying three communications down stairs and one on the landing upstairs. It contains six bedrooms, five upstairs and one largo one on the ground lloor. There are twelve rooms in all and some of the sitting rooms are ve»y commodious, all being lofty. Then by means of reversible fanlights placed over the partition doom a cool and refreshing current of air is not only permitted but even induced to pervade the upper part of the ground lloor and can by tlds means be watted from end to end uf the building. Lo much for the ventilation ; then also the drainage is as carefully ullended to by id sower 12 feet deep and 4 feet wall wl .' )i convoys all the smplusage com pk uly ..-.say bciu-utU the road to its proper tpb. 10. Thu bathroom, scullery, kitchen, outhouses (stables, carriage house, Ac ) are gem-tally well lilted with all the latest invented accessuiies, and the whole concern is pm.iy amt simply it gentleman'e model u.-i'ieoce. The windows uf the house me lilted with patent spring fastenings, and the mamolpiecea ate constructed of handsomely prepaud limit, panelled with heart of totara, and the rooms are papered with very costly and choico patterns ; Venetian blinds shade the windows and both internally and externally the house is most luxuriantly adorned and every convenience conducing to comfort provided. Messrs llealy and Beady, boardingshouse keepers, were convicted yesterday at Woodville, of sly grog selling at Manawatu Gorge and fined LSO Two speelers were at the same sitting, sentenced to six week, for robbery from the person. More steamers. Tyner and Co. contracted to run a monthly cargo boat from London to Antwerp, Sydney and New Zealand and back. Going to carry frozen meat J.l a lb cheaper than its carried now. My word, that'll cut into the direct lines. It will so ; its a wonder it hasn’t been done belore ; there’s no reason why frozen meat should’nt travel as fast as the mails; a week or ten days longer on the voyage makes no difference in the sales, but an enormous difference in the expense. A farthing in the lb. tots up on a big lot. Yes, it’s Is 8d clear profit on an 80 lb sheep; say 1)2000 saved on a cargo such ns the direct steamers often take. Do you think the new line will get any passengers ? I dare say it will. if the fares are low, as they doubtless will be. Fifty days with good accommodation, by a pleasant route, is not too long for passengers. It may open up a trade with the Continent. Yes, New Zealand wool will go straight to Antwerp, and there’s no saying what may spring out of diitct communication with Belgium. Emile de Hatveu a reams may be realised after all. And its a Napier venture. Can any good come out of Napier ? Bather ! If Auckland harbor were at Napier you’d see things spin in the wool anil meat line. But bow will it bo when the milway’s open through to Wellington V Oa, well, there you are; Wellington's bound to get tbe trade sooner or later; Naluu-'s fixed up that little arrangement for us. But meanwhile, Napier will have a good show with her caigo boats.—Press Cigarette.
