Concerning Voting.
To the Editor of the Standard, Sir, —Many persona often, while straining at a gnat, swallow a camel. It seems an opposition has been made to the nomination of Mr Phanzyu lor u seat on the Licensing Committee here, so great ia the dread of any new member being elected, and only because be has snares in the Wairarapa Loan Asso ■ ciatiou I Why, Sir, most of the members of tbe Licensing Committee hare shares in the same Society, It would have given me pleasure to have seen Mr Pharazyn elected, it would have giveu a respectable toue to the committee. Head the last clause ol No 11, page 7 —" No person who holds a paid cilice under the li.,v< lument is quaiilied.” How about Senior Major Buuuy ? No one, scarcely, can say how many oilices ho bolds' One thing we know, Mr Bumiy never works for nothing— not even for the pom Hospital, It was impolitic, if not illegal, ior any one trusteeship to sit on tno Licensing Committee to assist in granting, as it weie, himself or fnend a license. Claue 12 states tne penalty to be £SO. Again, read the second part ol section 5 clause 13, page 8. It distinctly states that a ratepayer can only vote lor one property " Cne v ote and no more." Not lot his own property first, and secondly as trustee lot a public or private hall. II so, this may be multiplied by making any number ol trustees snips. .then a returning officer should only give his casting rote. He should not interfere or use any language that would tend to influence any election. He sLouiU also be polite to rate* payers when they go to ask uuy assistance or iuiormatiou. Publicity will do good and not before necessity demands it, I am, Ac,, J. Featherston, February 23, 1887. (
