A New Canal.
The French (remarks the standard) have, started another canal idcv which throws Suez and Panama quite into ,‘,e shade, lbs project, which is ol a most colossal nature, is due to M. Rude, a civil engineer. It bus just been laid before the Academy ol Science. M. Rude proposes to cm a canal through Syria and Persia, and thereby unite the Mediterranean with the IV-isiau Gulf. It would start trom Antioch, opposite the island ol Cyprus. A portion ol the Orontcs would be coi hsod. The most dilhcult part to exeents wcu J be the cutting through ol the mouu* tains leading to thu Euphrates, which would also ho canalised as lar as Bihylon. From that town to Bagdad «u artificial canal would smihle ships to ria,;- the Tigris. Finally, the Tigris and Ch.it --.Vrah wuuid be c»ua* iised up to the Persian Gulf. The project, it is estimated, would trsu t in numerous and important advantage.-, it would ehortea the ■ mute from Kuropu to Asia by three days. This would interest the English as regard* j India, ana the French as regards their Uolonius in the far East.
