London, January 26. The French have bought five million pounds weight of Chicago preserved meats. Germany has quietly swept the market of Australian preserved meats, including all arrivals to date. The German Government have informed Sir Henry Holland that they have acquired the sovereignty of the Solomon Islands. A North Anglos German line are purchasing new territory from tbe natives. Tbe sale of firearms and spirits has been forbidden. The election ts fill tbe vacancy in the representation of the Exchange Division of Liverpool in the House of Commons, necessitated by the death of the late senior member, Mr David Duncan, Home Ruler, took place today, and resulted in the return of Mr Neville, a Liberal, by a majority of 11 votes over his opponent, Mr Goschen, tbe Chancellor of the Exchequer. The respective totals polled are stated to be 3222 and 8211, but the ballot-papers will be re-counted tomorrow, prior to the final declaration of the poll. Sydney, Jan 27. In consequence of tbe heavy rains the Clarence River at Grafton has been flooded to a greater extent than has previously been experienced. Two lives have been lost by the inundation, and great damage has been done to property throughout tbe district. The floods.have now partially subsided.
