The return of railway receipts and expenditure for the four’ weeks ending llth December shows the former to have been L 77.375 8s 4d, and the latter L 53,758 13s 3d. In the corresponding period last year the figures were respectively L79,96S 5s fid and L 48.066 9s. The North Island liues in the four weeks to llth December contributed L 26.416 8s Id, and the Middle Island lines L 50.959 Os 3d- In the previous year the amounts were L2 3,141 10s lid and L 53.826 14s 7d. The North Island lines absorbed L 19.423 16s, and the Middle Island lines 1,34,329 17s 3d. In the corresponding period the figures were L 16.488 15s 4d and L 32.177 13s Bd. The proportion of expenditure to revenue for the respective periods of 1885 and 1886 were ; —North Island —Kawakawa, 6196, 8096 ; AVhangarei, 8147, 89 95 ; Auckland, 85 01. 69 92 ; Napier, 57'89, 5775 ; Wellington, 74 66, 69 48 ; Wanganui, 97 09, 9044. Middle Island—HurunuiBluff, 73 69, 66 89 ; Grevmouth, 58 63,54 73 ; Westport, 44 46, 53 48 Nelson, 82 73, 77 35 ; Pioton, 104 - 84, 9935. Grand total, 74 90, 68 43. On the Welling'i.n section the total revenue was I 5987 14s Id, as against L 5850 8s 5d in ibe four weeks of the previous year. Tie nun her of pas sengers carried was 25,413 as against 24 732, and the fares amounted to LIBBO 12s 2d as against L 1966 Us 6d.
