The Mount Rennie Outrage
Strong efforts were made to get a reprieve of the prisoners, but without avail. The latest telegrams, on the subject are as follows :
Sydney, Jan. 6—Newman, one of the prisoners sentenced ts death for the Mount Bennie outrage, has been reprieved, in consequence of an explanatory letter written by Duffy, who is among those sentenced to death. Hill has also been reprieved, and both he and Newman have had their sentences commoted to imprisonment in irons for life. The other four, Duffy, Boyce, Martin and Bead, will be executed tomorrow morning.
Jan. 7—The Mount Bennie convicts were executed at Darlinghuret Gaol at 9 this morning. About ISO persons were present. Bead banded in a written statement declaring the innocence of himself and those who were reprieved, except Donnellan. There waa no demonstration in or onteide the gaol. Of the four men banged, Boyce died hardest, the straggles of the others being brief.
