Volunteering.

The shooting on the whole was very poor, although some good shots were made by a few individual competitors. Col Sergt Hale, of the Guards, was in good form, and shot very regularly ; the two Ballingers, particularly A Ballinger, did some good marksmanship ; so also did 0 Bentley, of Masterton, and Vol Harris, of Greytown, Vol Shaw, of the Guards, although not in his usual form, did very fairly. The committee cannot be complimented upon the efficiency of their arrangements, as they appeared to have overlooked the fact that they were in the position for the time of entertainers, and should have worked in unison with their confreres in au endeavour to make everything as smooth as possible and allow their visitors to leave with a good impression. As it was, one depended upon the other, and everything tending to success was almost neglected. The first morning there was no disc for Ho 3 target, and half the day was lost at that mark before the new ones, which had to be made, were procurable. Then the refresbs ment arrangements were the very reverse of satisfactory, and would make any person remember the occasion with a shudder; take also yesterday afternoon for instance, there was-not a single bottle of lemonade on the ground to allay the thirst provoked by the heat of the sun ; there was sufficient beer in buttles at 2s each to inflame the heads of all partakers, but an entire absence of cooling drinks. There is generally blundering and bungling at rifle matches in this district, but this affair would out herod the former ones in this matter. The markers and scorers were evidently thought mechanical machines which when once wound up would go fur a week ■ ii -nt any further consideration. The Secretary, Sergt Major Bezar, must be complimented upon the excellent manner in which he did bis duty and all his arranges meats were 'perfect; he had all the papers and prize lists thoroughly prepared in time for the distribution, which took place in the Town Hall in the evening. Major Bunny was present, and in suitable terms presented the winners with their prizes and trophies. Mr Buchanan also, who presented the Association with a special prize of £5 ss, addressed the Volunteers and the audience ; he said he bad heard great grumbling on the range about the quality of the ammunition, which he hoped would be remedied before the next annual meeting. He was satisfied that the President, Major Bunny, would look to this and before next year see that the defect was adjusted. Major Bunny, in referring to Mr Bccbanan’s remarks, said he would see that the ammunition for another meeting was of the best quality obtainable, and was sorry to think that the Association should have cause to complain of their cartridges. In the evening, before the presentations, the Amateur Dramatic Company put on the stage for the benefit of the funds of the Association, and at the committee’s request, the comedy, “ The Stage Struck Yankee,” and on the night before they presented “ The Turned Head,” with much success so far as the Dramatic Company was concerned, but the committee utterly failed to carry out their part of the both occasions, and supplied no vocal talent at all. Petty officer Wilson of the Navals came to the rescue with a good sailor’s hornpipe, ably performed ; and Col Sergt Hale of the Guards amidst much interruption, against which he had to protest, gave a good recitation. Vol G Bentley, of the Masterton Bifies, being the highest aggregate scorer among the Wairarapa riflemen, consequently wins the champion belt, subscribed for uud presented by the Wairarapa Volunteers. Tlie belt is to be wou twice iu succession to eutitle the bolder to retain it permanently. Col Sergt Hale, Sergt Gray, Vol A Ballinger, Sergt Kibblewhite, Vols Whiteman, B France, G Bentley, Ballinger, Shaw, Tocker Sergts Trotman, Gooding, Vol Harris, Lieut Benton, Sergt Button, Vol G Bentley, Petty Officer Taylor, and Corp Scott were the prize takers for individual prizes, Capt D Donald aud Col Sergt Hale were the recipients of the team prizes. The details of the prizes will appear in our next. Fiest Match. Greytown Match, 200 yards, ten shots at 3rd class target, five cash prizes ;
