SPORTING.

(Bt Luddxbdown). Some one has been writing in the Referee finding all kinds of fault with the handicapping for the Lower Valley Jockey Club's Meeting and holding np as a model to handicappers the professional handicapping of Mr Evett, for the Featherston New Year’s Day's Meeting. Now ae a professional myself, 1 cannot in fairness to Mr Evstt find any fault with his judgment, and consider he has treated all comers with justice, and in some oases even, justice slightly tempered with mercy. For instance, look at First Water in at fist 51bs against Girin fist for tbs New Year’s Handicap. I do not think much of First Water and never considered her a mare fit to carry much of my money, although she has a good “ flukey ” record ; but I do not think so mnoh of Giriri as to consider that she can concede to Mr Tanored’s man quite so much as 1 stone 91bs ; but if Mr Evett thinks otherwise I bow to his undoubted superior experienoe. Anyhow the top weight in the Tauherenikau Stakes, the other event, will not be my tip, although she may do the Flying even with fist 101b against SstansUa, my favorite, with fist lOlbs. It is very grati. fying to think that Mr Evett’s handicapping has been eo popular among owners as to secure so many good acceptances for our next very popular Tauherenikau meeting, hot I must also say that reading the weights parallel with those of the Lower Valley handicappers, I cannot in my heart of hearts do anything hot commend the local amateurs (il so they can be called) for their wise decisions. I will explain, Is Giriri with 9st any more dangsrons to the Slave or Mangle Filly with fist 101b and fist respectively, than the same mare is in respect to First Water in the New year Handicap ? 1 say decidedly, No ; and it is no more of a moral in the one case than the other. I would take a slight exception to the weight of Administrator and Normanby Ostfilb and fist 111b respectively. I would like to have seen them apportioned a little less in the L.V.J.O. Handicap, but I do think First Water in that event was placed where she should be, namely, above Giriri, and really Administrator and Normanby should easily whip Giriri at the two miles with any weight on their backs. At that distance she, barring accidents, should never see them at the finish. lam sorry to find Mr Tanored will not this year send some representatives to the Lower Valley, and think it would be far more palatable to the public had he done so, but as it is, the meeting will be a goed one, and perhaps, when Mr Tanored sees tbe resalt, he will find that he might have been a little hasty in his decision. I sincerely believe he would have safely won one event, and the Wairarapa men’s old favorite would have been to the front and secured for his popular owner another popular win. We all like to see Mr Tanored with ns, and a race meeting lacks something without him, bat these little misunderstandings will sometimes occur, and after reflection they are easily repaired. If Administrator can carry 9st lOlbs in the F. 8.0. Handicap, why in the name of conscience cannot be canter in a winner in the L.V.J.G. with 9st 81b. The cattle is no better down the Valley, although Giriri may have 21bs the advantage, which in that distanoe is a meie flea bite.
