Wairarapa Standard Published Tri-weekly, Price Id. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1886. Greytown Horticultural Society.

The Greytown Horticultural and Industrial Society will hold its 1886 Spring Exhibition in the Town Hall tomorrow, and the interest everywhere manifest in it goes to show that the Society has become animated with new life. The large number of persons who have contributed special prize money, the number of entries already sent in, and the unusual interest shown by the public, is a guarantee that the Town Hall will be visited, if Aquarius does not turn on his watering pot, by a large number of persons tomorrow. The Committee, and the Secretary especially, have worked diligently to score a success on this occasion, and the addition of a poultry show will of itself attract a number of additional visitors. Masterton, Carterton, the Lower Valley and Featborston, in addition to Greytown, will be well represented in the poultry and caged birds department. In ladies’ fancy work there will be a charming display, if we may judge by the pro, arises of work to be sent in. The present season of the year is rather late lor roses and several other classes of blooming plants, and too early lor a good show of fruit and well matured vegetables, but the tables will present a very attractive appearance notwithstanding. We would press upon all who have it in their power to send in exhibits of fruit and vegetables, to do so tomorrow. Ladies who have a good pot plant of any beauty should send it in for exhibition. Amateur gardeners should gather the best of what they possess and do likewise. It is thus that our exhibitions will become successful and a wider interest be taken in them. How often have we heard it said, “ Oh, if I put this into the Show I shan’t get a prize for it.” This is not the right way to look at the Exhibition. What we want is to see a good variety of every sort of flower and vegetable from all quarters ; the getting of a prize should not be the chief consideration. Let everyone help by sending in an exhibit, and so make the show successful, and this result will be a reward in itself. Bee farmers will find much to interest them at this Exhibition, and wo are glad to find that there is much healthy emulation among those who are doing their best to introduce the modern system of bee culture. We look forward with pleasurable anticipation to the morrow. With a fine day we predict that the Spring Show of 1886 will be one of the best the Society has yet had.
