SPORTING.

WAIBARAPA JOCKEY CLUB SPRING MEETING. Second Day.

Although the early morning was fine, towards 11 o’clock a cold south east wind arose with driving showers of rain, making matters particularly unpleasant for all concerned, consequently the attendance on the course was very limited. Tbe first race was started punctually to time, and brought out a field of seven, retultme as follows— Greytown Handicap, £25. f mjl«a, Giriri (Avery), 7st 71b .. i Princess Royal (Cuneen), 7st 41b .. 2 Little Scrub (Thompson), Bst 71b .. 3 Giriri won a most interesting race by a bare length (Giriri won two races the day before at Porirua, and did a journey afterwards by train.) Lyford), and hurting him considerably. Halioore won a most exciting raoe by a head. Forest King was neck and neck with him at the last hurdle, but Halioore just poshed bis neck in front at the post. The Hack Hurdles was won by Walkover with the greatest of ease. Lady Bab, who led hall way round, and Exchange coming in a long way behind. Time, 2min 40seo, 68 on totalisator, 39 on winner. First Water, Pilgrimage, and nearly all the others in close attendance. Time, Imin 48i secs, 134 investors, 17 on winner. Div L 7 Is. Normanby Bst, Miss Barnum 7st 121b, Little Scrub 7st 12lb, and Pilgrimage 7st 101b also ran. Glaicks was scratched for all engagements at the meeting. Div. £3 12s.

As upon the first day the band was on the course and tried by their good musio to en« liven the otherwise miserable surroundings It is to be fervently hoped that never again will races in the Wairarapa receive such a disastrous check by bad weather.

The Consolation was won by Normanby. It was a clinking race. Little Scrub was second and Smooth third. Miss Barnum and Little Fraud alsoraa, Div. £1 12s.

The privilege holders must have been considerable losers, especially the holders of the gate privileges. The catering upon this occasion was all that could be desired, and it seemed lamentable that the efforts of Mr AL Whyte, who had such an excellent spread in the grand stand booth, Mr A Grrigg, who had the refreshment booth on the course, aud the publicans, should have met with such a bad return for their efforts to make everyone comfortable.

The Stewards were a'l at their posts, and they, with the Secretary endeavoured to make the very lest of a very bad job, and the meeting was conducted equally as well as if the greatest success had been achieved.
