(By Loddebdown). For the first day’s meeting I tip for the Trial Stakes Miss Barnum. For the Moroa Handicap— Little Scrub. Hurdles— Freebooter. Birthday Cup—Rumour. Great preparations are now being made for the Wairarapa Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, which will- take place to-morrow and the next day, and it is sincerely to be desired that the weather will prove propitious. Mr G. Jones bas secured one publican’s booth and Mr Hammerich has taken the Grand Stand Publican’s booth. Mr A. L. Whyte has .conduct of the Grand Stand refreshment room, and will no doubt give every satisfaction. Mr Grigg, of Greytown, has the confectioner's booth outside, so the requirements in this department will no doubt be amply attended to. The Greytown Private Brass Band will perform on both days. The coarse is looking well and weather favourable the running will be as smooth as may be desired, alk the defected places being well covered with sawdust. It is anticipated that a very large number of visitors will arrive by special trains from Wellington, and the hotel accommodation will be taxed to its utmost capacity, especially as in addition, tbe Guards team will be up from Wellington to take part in the Rifle Shooting Match, and there will also be a numoer of visitors attracted by (he Wairarapa Gan Glob’s Meeting to be held on Thursday, entrwi for which will be very numerous, the Baud also performing on that ocoasiou ou tbe ground. r,v t «ierston Koad Board. I , i | This board met on Saturday at Featherston. Present—Messrs J Tully (chairman), Monckton, MoDougall, Matthews, Bidwill, , Elgar, and Dowmau. The minutes of the last tegular meeting and of the special meeting were read and confirmed. treasurer's BIrOBT. The Treasurer’s report was read as follows —I hays to report the amount to the credit of ordinary account at date as L 950 10s 7d, and imprest account L7l 7s sd. Since last meeting the following amounts hare been received—General rates L5Ol 6s 3d (making a total at date ot LIBB6 lls 3d), deposit on contract L 6, rent of tollgate L3I 16s lOd, poundage lees LI 14s, special rates LIS 14s 4d. The amounts to credit ot each snbdistrict are given below. These , do not include the amonut of Crown Lands rates not yet received, and the payments to be made to-day have not been taken into consideration. An effort is being made tv 0 lleot the balance of rates, and it is hoped -luS will be effected without the necessity of legal proceedings. Some discussion ensued as to the rate of wages resolved upon by the Board, and it was observed that the Board had fixed the day’s wages at 6s fid, except in exceptional oases, as in Mr Matthews’ ward. It was also remarked oy some members that in Mr Bowman’s ward the wages were passed by the warden at the rate of 7s per diem. The Chairman asked Mr Bowman why he allowed the extra sixpence in hie paysheets. Me Bowman replied that he oomd not get suitable men for less than 7s per day, and that he wonld not allow snob men as he had seen working in other wards for the fis fid per day to do work in his ward, as be considered they did not do justice; good men wonld not work under 7s per day. Mr Bidwill said if Mr Bowman found roadmen not doing their doty it was hieplaoe to briog the matter before the Board. Mr Moßongali said if the warden oonld not get men to accept work at the Board’s rate ot wage, it was the duty of the overseer to endeavour to obtain labor at snob rates. CORRESPONDENCE The Clerk read the correspondence out. wards as per business reported in our last account of the Board’s proceedings. Correspondence inwards was read as fol> lows From Mr Olliver, poundkeeper, Waihenga, offering to retain the office of poundkeeper on (he receipt of £26 per annum in addition to the poundage fees. The application was not entertained. From Mr Buncau Cameron, applying for £lO to be spent on the road down through McLeod’s run, to allow him to get his wool to the beach. The writer said it was a public roed and he thought as a ratepayer he was entitled to some consideration. From Mr £ Pearce, trustee in Wall's estate, agreeing to allow the new road through Wall’s property to be proceeded with at onoe, providing the Board conveyed the old toad over to the estate in exchange. From J Wilkinson, in reference to the fencing at Cross’s Oreek, and offering to do the same at 15s per chain, providing the Board paid for the said work in advance. From Mr King, engineer, regretting that he was not able to get plans, &0., ready to present to the meeting re the proposed deviation at Fetheriok’s bridge, near Mat* tinborough. From the Colonial Secretary’s Office re tba Loans to Public Bodies Act, and announcing that the special order was duly entered in (he Gazette. TENDERS. From B. Heagerty, L 3 4s per chain, work on Pah Hill (12 chains). From Alex Blok, same ooutraot, 16s per chain, culvert LI 14s, cutting at B|d on bio yard, about L 32 to L 35 in all (accepted). REPORT ON IBS WAIOBINE BIVIB BANK, Mi Skeet read the committee's report on the state of the river bank between the Waioblue bridge and Greytown. The Chairman said he thought that it was purely a matter for the County Council to consider. Mr Tally thought the Board wonld be in error to interfere; let it be a matter lor the County Connell's consideration. Mr Bidwill moved and Mr Elgar seconded that the report be received. Regarding the planting of willows on the south side of the Waiobine, near Mr Buchanan’s homestead, it was resolved that Mr Buchanan have permission to plant willows if he chooses, but (he Board will take no responsibility in the matter whatever. Mr Bidwill demurred to an extent, as be thought the Board should not even pass an opinion; but the matter was allowed (0 remain as above. MB TIER’S APPLICATION. The Overseer reported that two platform bridges was requited in the locality and after some discussion as to the liability of Mr Bonald to cover the drains, it was resolved that the work be done. MB COWMAN’S MOTION. Mr Bowman’s motion, of which notice was given, was withdrawn. WAIHENOA POUND. The Clerk was instructed to request the retiring poundkeeper to band the key of the pound to (he overseer. MB CAMERON’S REQUEST. Mr Elgar said it was not a legalised road that Mr Cameron required the mousy to be spent upon. Matter allowed to stand over until next meeting. SUNDRIES. It was resolved to refer Mr Pearce’s letter (or copy of same) to Mr G Wall. Be Mr Wilkinson’s offer to do fencing at Cross’s Oreek at 15s per chain, paid in advance, it was resolved that L 35 be the amount to be paid, in accordance with a previous arrangement proposed by Mr Wilkinson. The Chairman and Mr Matthews thought Mr King might have strained a point to get the plans of the Waihenga road deviation before the meeting. It was said that Mr King was waiting for information from Survey Office. Mr Bidwill said the Tauncrenikau bridge required strengthening. LOANS TO PUBLIC BODIES ACT. Mr Bowman said he would like to borrow under this Aot LSOO, to be spent in No 5 Ward. Mr Meßougall said be wonld apply for £2500 to build a bridge dver the Bnmahaoga river at Kahantara.
