Wairarapa Standard Published Tri-weekly, Price Id. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1886. The Pastoral Society’s Show.

On Wednesday next the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society will hold the annual Show op the ••lunnds at Carterton, and we sincerely hope that on this occasion the weather will be propitious. We are glad to notice that there is an increase in the entries of horses and sheep and also in farm and dairy produce, and though in other classes there is a slight decrease compared with last year, the average is good. As stated in our last there is a feeling among the settlers that it would be a wise thing to hold the Show a little later, when the weather oonld be depended upon with a little more certainty, and there is no doubt that if the weather is unfavorable on Wednesday that the committee will take the matter into consideration with regard to the Shows of the future. We hope, however, that the day will be gloriously fine, and that the settlers from one end of the Valley to the other will show by their presence the interest they take in the Show. The interchange of opinions with each other, and a critical examination of the stock or produce they are particularly interested in will be of service long after the Show is over. An excursion train has been arranged for from Wellington city, and there will probably be many visitors from thence ; but we cannot but regret that the formal ceremony of driving the last spike which will link the Empire City by rail with the West Coast townships should be fixed for the same day. Several Wairarapa settlers would have taken part in that demonstration bad it been arranged for another day, and others residing in Wellington would have been free to come up to the Show. Last year His Excellency promised to visit us on the Show day, but the wet prevented him from fulfilling bis promise. We were in hopes that this year His Excellency and suite wonld ha/e been in our midst, for the Lower Valley people have seen nothing of Her Majesty’s representative since his arrival in New Zealand.
