Papers in reference to the qeation of coloui" • 1 defences,including Aomiral Tryon’s schcM have been presented to Parliament. Thi- -m ow that the Admiral proposed that war -tH.-t ls should be manned by the Admira1 1 y -m.. the colonies should bear the cost of mmnt -iiauee, estimated at 152,000 yearly. Mr Gillies proposed a schema involving aa expenditure of £90,00 C. The New Zealand Government considered their position an exceptional one, and proposed to make an annual payment of £20,000 direct to the Imperial Government.
The papers in reference to the question of colonial defences, which have been presented to Parliament, show that all the oolooiee hare objected to bear the cost of providing and eqmpping a colonial navy, bat the Governments of NSW end Queensland have agreed to pay the interest on the capital oost of the fleet, and for depreciation. The Vic* torian Government, however, have objected to this.
