will again be the scene of beauty and pleasure, the anniversary soiree of the Oddfel" lows of this town taking place. The com. mittee have been energetically working to make the arrangements most complete, and much trouble has been taken to render the

decorations of the room attractive with flags, evergreens, and banners. The ladies, too, have willingly assisted in supplying the tables of the refreshment room, which will be under the personal superintendence of Mr and Mrs Reynolds. Bros Loasby and Maguire will act as MC’s, and the music will be of the best. Many visitors are expected from other parts of the Valley. With the brotherhood in their regalia, the beautiful dresses and other attractions of the ladies, the music, the decorations and a tempting spread, the Oddfellows’ Soiree of 1886 will no doubt be an advance upon its predecessors. The brethren of the Greytown Lodge of Oddfellows are requested to meet at the hall to-night to get their regalia. A very pleasant time was spent at the room of the Greytown Gospel Temperance and Blue Ribbon Association last evening. The room was comfortably filled, and the entertainment consisted in everybody puzzling themselves over a aeries of puzzles. There were many ingenious devices supplied by different members, and not a little amusement was caused at the efforts of one after another to nnrival the secret ways of the mysterious objects subbmitted. In some faces could be noticed a decided change from an amusing smile upon first taking up a puzzle to a look of distraction, and finallyiol despair as the article was “ given up.’’ The death is announced of Mr Angus Dallas, saddler, a Wanganui resident for 18 years.

Whitaker, Glandelands, Hamilton, Auckland, was destroyed by fire the other afternoon. The house, which contained ten rooms, was insured lor £350 in tht Colonial Office.

The total Customs receipts for the month of September amounted to £114,202 15s Bd, The total collections for the six monthly eriod ending with September thus amount to £647,596, leaving a deficiency of £57,404, or at the rate ot £114,000 per annum. The New Zealand Beer Duty for September realised £3739, as against £3162 for August, 1886, and as against £3971 for September, 1885, The total for six months is about £22,800, as compared with £2i,500, which represents half the estimate for the year. The deficiency on that item is therefore some £4700.

On Saturday morning last as the up train from Wellington to the Wairarapa was ascending the incline towards the Bimutaka, the whistle of the engine suddenly blew forth a loud and prolonged screech and the train was abruptly stopped. The passengers on looking ahead of the train to see the cause of tlm impediment could see a cow on the line which was determinedly keeping the track for some considerable distance directly in front of the train. The engine driver would have forced the animal off the line with the cow catcher, but one of the " bosses ” who happened to be on board directed him to leisurely follow in the wake of the quadruped, until her will and pleasure inclined her to allow the train to run at its usual pace. Mr F. H. Wood holds a most important auction sale at Carterton on Friday next of valuable freehold property, including the house and land now occupied by Mr R. Crawford. He also sells the house, outbuild'* ings, orchard, and land belonging to Mr H. S. Whyte, who is leaving the district. The sale takes takes place at the Carterton auction rooms.
