The Great Storm.

To the Editor of the Standard,

Sir,—A very interesting paragraph appeared in your paper on Friday. It was Mr Wiggins’ warning of a terrible storm to take place on the 29th of this month, Wednesday next. I do not think New Zealand will be affected by it if it is to sweep over the Atlantic and spend itself in the Kocky Mountains of America. It will probably be felt in Europe and America chiefly. The prediction of this storm taken in connection with another that this month or next there will be appalling earthquakes, the like of which has not been heard of for 3000 years, leads one to consider whether a crisis in the world’s history has not been reached. Should these pi edict ions prove to be correct and the pent up forces of Nature break forth, it may bring changes other titan physical. 1 am not hinting at the absurd belief that the last days of this planet are at hand and that it will be des* troyed by tire, but I venture to suggest that having expei ionced ten ible depression commercially, politically, socially, and religiously, it points to outside influences bearing down upon us ; perhaps the time has come when this will be thrown off—with mighty convulsions of nature it may be—and the wotld at large be released from this weight which has increased for several years past. We may bo under planetary influence to an exlc-rl that science has not yet discovered, and when this influence is eouuteracied an in ol prospeiity may set in. Ido net say insitiveiy that it will be so, but 1 throw out these thoughts as worthy of consideration, Sincerely do 1 hope, if an improvement cun only be effected by the removal ol (hose depressing influences and if that removal can only be brought about by a terrible convulsion of Nature, that such a combination of circumstances may be close at hand. 1 am Ac., Epsilon.
