Fatal Accident at Matarawa

A lamentable occurrence took place last Saturday afternoon at Matarawa, wbich resulted in the death of a lad named Waterson, of about fourteen years of age, a son of Mr John Waterson. It was about five o’clock and the lad was engaged with bis eldest brother in putting in some straining posts lor wire fencing. By some means a post, just before being dropped into a hole, fell over and in its fall struck the lad upon the temple, felliug him to the earth. He lay apparently stunned, and Dr Johnson, of Carterton, was seat for with all haste. When he arrived be found tbe unfortunate lad dead, and gave it as bis opinion that he couJd not have lived five minutes after the accident. Mr Waterson is one of the first settlers in the Wairarapa, and the blow has b -en a heavy one to the family. An ioquest will be held to-day.
