Magisterial Changes.

Somehow or other the Government usually contrive to make a muddle in connection with most things wbieb they attempt to do. They recently decided to shift lit Stratford,

R.'T,, from l' e Vv’iir uv.p.i .’i-'ri i ‘o thu Thninoo a. I u bring Mi War: I d Al., back to tbe Wairarapa. Mr Wardell wis to bare been succeeded as Resident Magistrate at Wellington, by Mr Lowtber Tiroad. it now tarns out that Mr Broad will not accept tbe appointment of Resident Magistrate at Wellington, so tbe Government are looking out for somebody else to fill that position. In the meantime the Wairarapa district is left without a Resident Magistrate, but Mr War dell is to C'>me out once a week to try and hurry through the Wairarapa Court business. In short, the old objectionable arrangement of Mr Wardell acting as Resident Magistrate for both Wellington and the Wairarapa is to be tried again, lor a time, until someone is permanently appointed to the Wellington Bench. This arrangement will work very badly, and it is to be hoped that it will not last long. The settlers in the Wairarapa do not desire that Mr Wardell should be continually flying about between this district and Wellington City, trying to accomplish the work of tbe Courts in both places. They wish that Mr Wardell should devote his whole time to tbe Magisterial duties of tbe Wairarapa district. The Government ought to have definitely settled all future arrangements with respect to changes in the location of Resident Magistrates before disturbing those which were previously in existence. As tbe case stands, the Government should lose no time in appointing a Resident Magistrate for Wellington, so as to leave Mr Wardell free to take up his duties in tbe Wairarapa.
