The other day a cable message conveyed the intelligence that an earthqaake, causing great destruction to property and loss of life had occurred at Philistra, a town on the south west coast of Greece, in the province of Mores. Severe shocks were also felt in various parts of Egypt and Italy. Since then a very severe shock of earthqaake has been felt along the eastern seaboard of America and in Alabama and New York. The shock wss fait tbs strongest at Angnsta and Savannah, in Georgia, and at Charleston. At these towns several houses fell, and 60 persons were killed. From Constantinople the news comes that several severe shocks of earthquake have been experienced at Smyrna, but no serious damage has resulted. A serious volcanic eruption has occurred at tbs island of tialitn. off the cosat of Tunis.

The population have been driven out of doors, and many have suffered great privations. Shocks of earthquake continue to be felt along the sea board. Farther intelligence received from South Carolina regarding the earthquakes give harrowing details. The town of Charleston is completely isolated, bridges, railways, and telegraph linee being destroyed. There were ten shocks, which nearly maddened the inhabitants, the dead being left still nnburied. Many terrible and affecting scenes were witnessed at Richmond, Virginia, the convicts in the eity gaol making frantic efforts to escape. The town of Summerville has been nearly destroyed, and the damage to property in Senth Carolina is immense.
