A cubious difficulty has arisen with respect to the Loan Bill. The Bill provides for raising a loan of £1,600,000. But the House in Committee recently struck out all the items which, by Mr Richardson's amend* ment, they had been invited to excise, and the schedule was thus reduced by a sum of £175,000, The Government will therefore require to do one of three things. They may propose (1) to reduce the lean by the amount saved, or (2) to insert new items in the schedule so as to absorb the £175,000; or (3) to enter the £175,000 into the schedule as unallotted. Of course, with a sum of £175,000 available for application, a number of bon members interested are trying to get certain works put on the schedule in place of those struck out. Amongst other works it has been suggested that the PalmerstonWoodville line, through tbs Manawatn Gorge, undoubtedly ought to have a larger sum set down, on account both of its importance as an essential link of the main trunk line and of its assumed profitableness. At the present moment of writing we do not know what course the Government will adopt in this matter, but it is almost a certainty that they will find some works to which the £175,000 shall be applied, and thereby keep the loan at the original figure of £1,500,000. Clearly, Ministers desire that the loan should not be for a penny less than the milliou and a half first proposed.
