Wairarapa Standard Published Tri-weekly, Price Id. MONDAY, JULY 26, 1886. The Governor.

A statement recently found currency to the effect that his Excellency thß Governor was trying to obtain a suitable residence in Dnnedin, at which place he proposed to make an extended stay. On this subject the Otago Daily Times remarks [l— We have reason to believe that in the depressed condition of affairs in this part of the colony and the fact that he has resided in all the other large centres, his Excellency the Governor |is specially anxious to come here now, and intends to manage to do so even if he should not be able to get as convenient a house as be might desire.” We hardly see what good the Governor oonld do in mitigating " the depressed condition of affairs in Otago,” by going to live there for a time. The expenditure oi the Vice Regal establishment would have no appreciable effect on the trade oi Dunedin shopkeepers, and the hosts of unemployed men and their starving families would not feel their sufferings in the least degree made less by the fact that a real live Governor was actually living in their midst. The presence ot his Excellency in Dunedin might afford" the upper ten ” there an opportunity of attending a few Vice Begsl receptions and thereby give a stimulus to extravagance in dress on the part of the ladies; but that wonld not be an altogether good result. It is no donbt advisable that his Excellency should visit and make a brief stay in each of the chief cities of the colony, but as a general rule it wonld be for the beat interests of the colony, that he should reside lor the greater part of his time at Wellington, the seat of Government.
